Surgical Site Infections in Elective Abdominal Operations: Predisposing Factors. A Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial
ConclusionThere is a paucity of studies assessing the relative contribution of the various predisposing factors to the incidence of SSIs. In our study, patients with DM, HF, respiratory deficiency, postoperative hemorrhage and concomitant infections, and patients undergoing lower GI tract operation appeared more prone to SSIs, presenting this complication 2 to 8 times more frequently. The risk of SSI following laparoscopic surgery was one quarter of that of open elective abdominal surgery. On the other hand, patients in this series with obesity, renal failure, steroid intake, radiation therapy, thyroid disease, stomas, pre...

Endovascular Repair of Isolated Abdominal Aortic Dissection. Literature Review
ConclusionsPatients with AAD are at considerable risk of complications and in-hospital mortality. Based on current evidence, endovascular treatment appears to be associated with a lower risk of major complications and mortality than open repair or conservative treatment, and the need for secondary intervention is rare. Measuring the Impact of Trauma in Greece: A Systematic Review of Greek Trauma Registries. Is Quality Improvement Achievable?
ConclusionsRTAs and falls are responsible for a significant proportion of the Greek trauma burden. The small number of publications of the data from the registries and the complete absence of quality control studies indicate that trauma auditing in Greece is still in an embryonic state. There is a pressing need for national consensus on how to record and investigate trauma. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Beneficial Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on an Open Abdominal Laparostomy Wound
ConclusionThe application of HBOT for cases of burst abdomen has not been previously documented. This is the first report of its beneficial effect in a single case with an extensive open laparostomy wound. Further studies need to be conducted in order to confirm the therapeutic effect of HBOT on open abdominal wounds. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Amyand ’s Hernia in a 76-year-old Greek Male
AbstractThe presence of an inflamed or non-inflamed appendix in an inguinal hernial sac is called Amyand ’s hernia and it is a rare condition. The case is presented here of a 76-year-old Greek male with a known right reducible inguinal hernia, who presented at the hospital emergency department with the symptoms and signs of incarceration of the hernia. Intraoperatively, an inflamed appendix was revea led trapped in the hernial sac. To our knowledge this is the first case of Amyand’s hernia reported in a patient in Southwestern Greece. The First Case of Tracheotomy Published in Greece in the 19 th Century
AbstractThe first publications related to tracheotomy and its implementation in Greece appeared in the medical print media in the 19th century. The first tracheotomy in Greece was carried out without anesthesia in the house of a small patient in 1864 by Tilemachos Maratos and Theodoros Aretaios. They subsequently reported the problems they faced and the outcome of the patient, thus setting the foundations for the implementation and establishment of tracheotomy in Greece. A short biography of Theodoros Aretaios follows. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Small Bowel Perforation due to Ingested Foreign body
We present here 4 cases of small intestinal perforation caused by accidental ingestion of foreign bodies, from a total of 1,100 surgical procedures in one unit over a one-year period (September 2016 -August 2017). All 4 cases occurred in elderly patients who were using an artificial denture. The clinical appearance was that of acute abdomen, and in one case there had been formation of an enterocutaneous fistula a long time after the foreign body was swallowed. Typically, preoperative abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed the possible presence of a foreign body, which was confirmed intraoperatively. All 4 patients underw...

Cytological and Ultrasound Findings in Indeterminate Lesions of the Thyroid Gland
ConclusionsIn this study, the only US finding shown to be correlated with malignant histology in thyroid nodules of indeterminate cytology on FNAB was ill-defined margins. More precise US criteria are needed to decide on surgery in patients with thyroid nodules of indeterminate cytology. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Surgical Considerations in Subclinical Cushing ’s Syndrome. When is it Time to Operate?
AbstractSubclinical Cushing ’s syndrome (SCS) is a disorder characterized by autonomous cortisol secretion and the presence of an adrenal incidentaloma, in the absence of clinical features of Cushing’s syndrome. SCS is of special interest because it has been associated with several disorders, such as atherosclerosis and ar terial hypertension. Despite decades of research, SCS continues to generate controversy regarding its diagnosis and subsequent management. Several issues remain to be resolved. A universal agreement on the hormonal diagnosis of the syndrome remains elusive. Autonomous cortisol secretion has been ill ...
