Staying the Surgeon ’s Hand: Role of Percutaneous Catheter Drainage in Acute Necrotising Pancreatitis
ConclusionPCD is a feasible and successful modality of treatment for acute NP requiring intervention. With the use of PCD, surgical necrosectomy may be completely avoided or delayed until the condition of the patient is stable enough to sustain surgery. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Glycemic Control of Surgical Patients. What is Correct, What is Not
AbstractPerioperative hyperglycemia is very common among critically ill patients with or without diabetes mellitus (DM). Perioperative elevated levels of blood glucose (BG) have been linked with increases in morbidity, infections, anastomotic failure, autoimmune dysfunction, and raised mortality and prolongation of hospitalization. A variety of different approaches have been taken for the control of BG in the perioperative period, and different methods of measurement have been proposed, among which, point of care (POC) meters, arterial blood gas analysis and venous plasma analysis prevail. The aim of this literature review...

Minimally Invasive Retroperitoneal Approach for Pancreatic Necrosectomy via a Percutaneous Drainage Tract
ConclusionThe management of IPN has shifted away from ON, which was associated with high morbidity, towards less invasive techniques. MIPs should be used initially as the surgical treatment of choice in most cases. When this is not feasible, or when the MIP is not successful, ON should be implemented. Management of Occult Breast Cancer with Axillary Involvement
AbstractOccult breast cancer (OBC), which is defined as clinically recognizable axillary metastatic carcinoma from an undetectable primary breast tumor, accounts for less than 1% of all patients who present with breast cancer (BC). Although criticized for high false positive rate (FPR) in routine BC diagnosis, the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is crucial in the diagnosis of OBC. The standard treatment for OBC, initially, was blind modified radical mastectomy, but one third of patients who undergo blind mastectomy, will have no histopathological findings of carcinoma. Current evidence supports the use of whole br...

Bilateral Ectopic Axillary Breast Tissue in an Adult Female
AbstractAccessory breast tissue is rare, affecting about 2-6% of the general population and it is usually bilateral. It is a benign lesion that indicates incomplete involution of the milk line during embryogenesis. Most of the defects appear where the embryonic milk-line was located, but cases have been reported of ectopic breast tissue in other parts of the body, including the face, scapula, limbs or buttocks. The first classification of congenital breast anomalies was published by Kajava in 1915, who ordered them in classes from I to VIII. Although this classification was later simplified, the original continues to be tha...

Intestinal Tuberculosis: When to Operate?
ConclusionThis case report illustrates the position of our team in favor of conservative measures for the treatment of intestinal TB and of reserving surgery for complications or failure of conservative treatment. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Inflammatory Pseudotumor of the Spleen
ConclusionsIPTs are very rare benign tumors which mimic other benign or malignant tumors. The clinical diagnosis is difficult, but they have a very good prognosis. Surgeons should be aware of the condition in order to avoid misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

The effect of MPFF on skin temperature at different stages of chronic venous insufficiency
ConclusionThis study has shown that CVI is associated with skin temperature increases in the lower limbs, in relation to the 6 different stages of the CEAP classification. Skin temperature, however, cannot be used as a parameter for evaluation of the clinical outcome. Daflon ® administration appears to have a beneficial effect on the skin temperature elevation occurring in the legs of patients with CVI at the different stages of the CEAP classification, and consequently is likely to help to prevent complications, such as venous ulcers. Quantitative expression of ING2-mRNA in invasive cancer of the colon and rectum
ConclusionsThese results lead to the conclusion that the level of this specific mRNA can be prognostic of clinical outcome. Further research is needed, both to corroborate this correlation and to elucidate the mechanism of ING2 action in colorectal cancer. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)

Beneficial effect of MPFF administration on the healing process of venous ulcer
ConclusionAdministration of MPFF has a beneficial effect on capillary permeability and improves the microcirculation, with particular effect on the WBCs trapped in the capillaries around the venous leg ulcer. As a consequence MPFF administration improves the healing rate of the venous ulcers. (Source: Hellenic Journal of Surgery)
