Cone-beam computed tomography compared to X-ray in diagnosis of extremities bone fractures: A study of 198 cases
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Prof. M. Ricci, M. Boldini, E. Bonfante, E. Sambugaro, E. Vecchini, G. Schenal, B. Magnan, S. MontemezziAbstractCBCT is an imaging technique consisting of X-ray computed tomography, in which the x-rays are divergent, forming a cone.During 2015, a new model of CBCT, New Tom 5G XL (Verona), was used in the Radiology Department of The University of Verona, in collaboration with the Orthopaedics Department. Our study was carried out from October 2015 to October 2016 (198 patients). We compared CBCT with standard x-ray in the diagnosis of foot ...

Efficiency and reproducibility in pulmonary nodule detection in simulated dose reduction lung CT images
ConclusionSimulated standard deviation 21 images can reproduce the image interpretation result of original images, whereas simulated standard deviation 29 images may compromise the accuracy of nodule assessment. The effect on the reading time was not observed with dose reduction simulation. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Digital subtract angiography and lipiodol deposits following embolization in cirrhotic nodules of LIRADS category ≥3
ConclusionThe LIRADS can be used to predict DSA findings and lipiodol deposits in nodules with LIRADS score 3 and above. LIRADS 3 nodules tend to be DSA-negative and have less lipiodol deposits. DSA and lipiodol deposits become more conspicuous in nodules from LIRADS 3 to 5.Graphical abstract (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Calcification of the linea aspera: A systematic narrative review
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Samantha Bee Lian Low, Andoni Paul TomsAbstractThis review aims to consolidate the published demographics, clinical and radiological features of calcific tendonitis affecting the linea aspera. Using the PRISMA protocol, 55 clinical cases were extracted from 19 shortlisted papers. In a patient presenting with thigh and/or hip pain, radiologic evaluation should commence with plain radiographs; subsequent cross-sectional imaging, if necessary. Our review of the literature indicates that calcific tendonitis can be safely diagnosed when intrate...

Secondary aneurysmal bone cyst in Langerhans cell histiocytosis: Case report, literature review
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): P. Lomoro, I. Simonetti, G. Vinci, V. Fichera, L. Tarotto, P. Trovato, M.S. Prevedoni GoroneAbstractLangerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease of the myeloid precursor cells, it predominantly occurs in the skull and long bones as unifocal bone lesions. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are benign, expansive and lytic bone. Reports of secondary ABC occurring in LCH are rare, having only been reported twice in the skull. Here, we report the first case of LCH masquerading as ABC in a 14-month-old female child who presented with a rapidly...

Kounis syndrome induced by contrast media: A case report and review of literature
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Kei Shibuya, Shu Kasama, Ryuichi Funada, Hiroyuki Katoh, Yoshito TsushimaAbstractKounis syndrome (KS) is an acute coronary disorder associated with anaphylactic reactions. The purpose of this report is to identify the features of KS triggered by contrast media on the basis of our experience and from literature review. We have described a case and literature review of KS triggered by injection of contrast media. Including the present case, we reviewed eleven cases of KS. Six cases developed KS in diagnostic radiology departments.KS could be ...

The clinical significance of indeterminate pulmonary nodules in melanoma patients at baseline and during follow-up chest CT
ConclusionBaseline IPN are most likely benign, while interval IPN are high risk for metastasis. Absence of volume increase of IPN within 6 months excluded metastasis in most patients. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance T2* mapping for structural alterations in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
ConclusionIn this study, parametric mapping identified lower T2* values in HCM patients compared to controls, especially in a sub-group of patients with myocardial fibrosis. As myocardial fibrosis has been suggested to influence prognosis of patients with HCM, T2* mapping may add information for identifying a higher risk sub-group of HCM patients.Graphical abstract (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Localized malignant pleural mesothelioma mimicking an anterior mediastinal tumor
We report the case of a 40-year-old Japanese male with an LMPM mimicking an anterior mediastinal tumor due to invasion to the anterior mediastinum, and we discuss mainly the differentiation of LMPM from an anterior mediastinal tumor. The present tumor had a long shape along the pleura, and LMPM could be one of the differential diagnoses. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Solidified mucinous tumor of the ovary presenting characteristic MRI finding
We report a rare case of a solidified mucinous tumor of the ovary, which showed unique findings on MR images. The tumor demonstrated hypointensity on T2-weighted images, not stained glass appearance, mimicking ovarian fibrous tumor such as thecoma-fibroma. Histopathological examination confirmed solidified contents of the tumor with numerous septa and diagnosed mucinous borderline tumor/atypical proliferative tumor. Initial experience with irreversible electroporation of liver tumours
ConclusionIRE is safe for treating tumours not suitable for thermal ablation with 63% of patients being without local recurrence after one year in a group of patients with tumours deemed unresectable. IRE has a role in the treatment of unresectable liver tumours close to heat-sensitive structures not suitable for thermal ablation.Level of Evidence: Level 4, Case Series. Multiple liver pseudotumors due to hepatic steatosis and fatty sparing: A non-invasive imaging approach
In this study, we present two patients with hepatic steatosis and multiple nodular liver lesions, due to fatty infiltration and fatty sparing respectively, mimicking a primary tumor or metastases (“pseudotumors”).Since the differential diagnosis of this kind of lesions can be difficult based on imaging alone, the knowledge of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings may help radiologists to avoid an incorrect diagnosis of liver tumor, and unnecessary biopsies. Can apparent diffusion coefficient values help distinguish between different types of pediatric brain tumors?
ConclusionThe application of an ADC diagnostic criterion would reduce the need for spectroscopic analysis. However, further research is needed to implement ADC in the differential diagnosis of PBT. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Comparison of reconstruction and acquisition choices for quantitative T2* maps and synthetic contrasts
ConclusionsSum of squares coil-channel combination produced artifacts in phase images, but images created with adaptive combination were artifact-free. The voxel-wise median signed difference of T2* between the vendor’s adaptive channel combination and k-space reconstruction modes was 2.9 ± 0.7 ms for white matter and 4.5 ± 0.6 ms for gray matter. Relative white matter/gray matter contrast of all synthetic images and contrast-to-noise ratio of synthetic T1-weighted images were almost equal between reconstruction modes. Our results indicate that synthetic contrasts can be generated from the vendor’s DICOM ...
