Estimation of diffusion, perfusion and fractional volumes using a multi-compartment relaxation-compensated intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) signal model
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Anna Rydhög, Ofer Pasternak, Freddy Ståhlberg, André Ahlgren, Linda Knutsson, Ronnie WirestamAbstractCompartmental diffusion MRI models that account for intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) of blood perfusion allow for estimation of the fractional volume of the microvascular compartment. Conventional IVIM models are known to be biased by not accounting for partial volume effects caused by free water and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or for tissue-dependent relaxation effects. In this work, a three-compartment model (tissue, free water and b...

Dynamic MR of the pelvic floor: Influence of alternative methods to draw the pubococcygeal line (PCL) on the grading of pelvic floor descent
Conclusions: PCLtip is a reliable and highly reproducible option to the official PCLcc to correctly grade the pelvic floor descent and could be used when the PCLcc is not clearly visible. The use of PCLsc overestimates the grading compared to the official PCLcc and should not be used to avoid wrong patients’ management. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Thyroid-associated Orbitopathy: Quantitative Evaluation of the Orbital Fat Volume and Edema Using IDEAL-FSE
ConclusionThe water fraction of orbital fat, the orbital fat volume and the degree of proptosis obtained with FSE-IDEAL were higher in TAO patients than in the controls. The water fraction was a new parameter for differentiating between TAO patients and healthy subjects. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Determining malignancy in CT guided fine needle aspirate biopsy of subsolid lung nodules: Is core biopsy necessary?
ConclusionCT-guided transthoracic needle biopsy of both small and large subsolid nodules is highly sensitive and very specific for making the diagnosis of malignancy with a low rate of complications. Additional core biopsy offered no significant advantage over fine needle aspirate biopsy alone. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Evaluation of iron deposition in brain basal ganglia of patients with Parkinson's disease using quantitative susceptibility mapping
ConclusionsUsing QSM in Red Nucleus, Subtania Nigera, and Globus Pallidus nuclei can help diagnosis and staging the patients with Parkinson's disease. In future, studies with emphasis on the disease stage can be helpful in evaluation the different parts of these three nuclei. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

“Learning from my experience”: Acute abdomen - Perforated Meckel's diverticulitis
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): William Janika Brackett, Shikha Khullar-GuptaAbstractThis is a case report documenting the risk in imaging misinterpretation of a pediatric patient that presented with an acute abdomen. Computed Tomography (CT) demonstrated an inflamed blind ending loop of bowel in the pelvis without an obvious cecal connection. The patient was taken to the operative theater, a normal appendix and perforated Meckel’s diverticulitis were resected. Meckel’s diverticulum is the most common small bowel abnormality and can have complications. We will emphas...

Incidentally detected total agenesis of the falx cerebri: Potential significance of this rare finding
We present a case of non-syndromic, asymptomatic absence of falx cerebri in an elderly patient, which was discovered incidentally on a computed tomography examination of the head. The superior sagittal sinus was narrowed, but present. Relevant anatomic and embryological considerations are discussed, as well as potential implications for clinical practice. Sodium MRI with 3D-cones as a measure of tumour cellularity in high grade serous ovarian cancer
This study demonstrates that 23Na-MRI using 3D-cones can rapidly assess sodium concentration in peritoneal deposits of HGSOC and that TSC may serve as a biomarker of tumour cellularity. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Radiological findings of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome in transplanted children previous affected by hemoglobinopathy: A neuroimaging retrospective analysis
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Eliseo Picchi, Francesca Di Giuliano, Simone Marziali, Silvia Minosse, Valentina Ferrazzoli, Valerio Da Ros, Javid Gaziev, Chiara Adriana Pistolese, Roberto Floris, Francesco GaraciAbstractTo evaluate, by Magnetic Resonance Imaging, if there is a typical pattern or severity of PRES in transplanted children for hemoglobinopathy. Secondary point was to investigate the pattern and severity of PRES in children with thalassemia-THAL and sickle-cell disease-SCD after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT). Finally, we evaluat...

Effectiveness of therapeutic standard concentration barium enema for colonic diverticular bleeding: Preliminary results
ConclusionAlthough we had no statistical evidence, a therapeutic barium enema with a standard concentration as a diagnostic examination may be effective for both the initial hemostasis and preventing the recurrence of colonic diverticular bleeding without complications. Typical but uncommon computed tomography angiographic appearance of left ventricular assist device: Awareness is key!
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Priya Sarv, Watal Pankaj, Staron Michelle, Sato ShawnAbstractLeft ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are now a standard of care for patients awaiting heart transplant. Our patient had undergone placement of the HeartWare LVAD and presented to the hospital with complaints of fatigue, dyspnea, fever and discharge from the LVAD site. She underwent computed tomography angiography (CTA) to evaluate the LVAD. CTA revealed a hypodense area surrounding the outflow graft throughout its extent. This was suspicious of a thrombus. The repeat CTA perfor...

Interstitial lung abnormality in stage IV non-small cell lung cancer: A validation study for the association with poor clinical outcome

Diagnostic performance of 2015 American Thyroid Association guidelines and inter-observer variability in assigning risk category
ConclusionThe estimated risk of malignancy in the high suspicion pattern of the 2015 ATA thyroid biopsy guidelines appears to be less than stated. However, this needs further validation in a larger cohort study. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)
