Two synchronous lung metastases from malignant melanoma: the same patient but different morphological patterns
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Andrea Borghesi, Andrea Tironi, Silvia Michelini, Alessandra Scrimieri, Diego Benetti, Roberto MaroldiAbstractMalignant melanoma is an aggressive cancer with a high metastatic potential. Among the multiple sites of metastatic disease, the lung is one of the most frequently involved sites. Typically, pulmonary metastases from malignant melanoma occur as solid nodules. Rarely, pulmonary involvement in metastatic melanoma occurs as subsolid nodules. The present article describes an unusual case of a patient with malignant melanoma that develop...

Tuberculous meningomyelitis in magnetic resonance imaging: A Chinese case report
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Xingli Liu, Maoping Rui, Liang LyuAbstractTuberculous meningomyelitis is a relatively rare but serious type of nervous system tuberculosis. This disease is caused by invasion of the spinal cord or the spinal meninges tuberculosis. The early symptoms are not typical and lack specificity. It can cause early changes in the MRI. Analysis of the MRI manifestations combined with the clinical manifestations and cere- brospinal fluid examination can facilitate accurate diagnosis of the disease. Early treatment has a clear effect, we want to increa...

Pseudoembryo associated with pseudogestational sac: A novel sonographic finding in ectopic pregnancy
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Srikanth Puttagunta, Stefanie Yan LeeAbstractIn this case report, we present a case of a hitherto undescribed "pseudoembryo" appearance in a fluid-filled endometrial cavity in ectopic pregnancy.Knowledge of this sonographic finding is clinically important, since the presence of a "pseudoembryo" could lead to the misidentification of a pseudogestational sac as an intrauterine pregnancy in the setting of ectopic pregnancy. This paper discuss reviews the pseudogestational sac and imaging findings which differentiate it from a true intrauterine...

Giant infrapatellar ganglion cyst of Hoffa's fat pad
We present the case of a 36-year-old woman who works as a kindergarten teacher, often she is kneeling on her knees due to the nature of the job. Since a year ago, she noticed that her right knee was swelling. She had an orthopaedic examination when she could no longer bend her knee. Inspection and palpation revealed the swelling of the anterior and anterior-lateral aspect of the knee. MRI imaging revealed a large, sharply defined, lobulated lesion of the infrapatellar fat pad. After the surgical incision, a lobular lesion was found and surgically removed. Histological analysis confirmed a ganglion cyst. (Source: European J...

Superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis: What radiologist and clinician must know?
ConclusionsThe SOVT can be secondary to different mechanisms. The SOVT secondary to trauma, recent surgery and coagulopathy are mostly non-aggressive, and can be managed by conservative therapy and anticoagulation. The SOVT in patients with orbital cellulitis, history of active sinusitis or paranasal sinus surgery are aggressive presenting with acute orbital swelling, abscess and visual loss. This type of SOVT can be complicated by extension to the cavernous sinus and intracranial structures. These patients require urgent antibiotics therapy and sinus surgery. The most severe type of SOVT is caused by mucormycosis which ma...

Practical applications of CISS MRI in spine imaging
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Zhixi Li, Yingming Amy Chen, Daniel Chow, Jason Talbott, Christine Glastonbury, Vinil ShahAbstractRoutine magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of the spine is often limited by low spatial resolution and artifacts resulting from cerebrospinal fluid pulsation. Balanced steady-state free precession sequences can supplement routine spin echo sequences and provide exquisite anatomic detail and high cerebrospinal fluid-to-soft tissue contrast, adding significant diagnostic value to the evaluation of a wide variety of spine disorders. The use of ‘Think-Out-Loud’ methodology in the development of teaching materials for abbreviated breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan (FAST MRI) interpretation, and a comparison of the learning experience of two reader cohorts
ConclusionTOL methodology allowed effective training of both groups of readers. The iterative nature of individual training ensured production of user-friendly materials including frequently-asked-questions sheets. It allowed for each person to feel that their views were fully listened to and incorporated into the training package, allowing for training materials with high face validity. Improvement in breast magnetic resonance imaging after a sentinel procedure for breast cancer with superparamagnetic tracers
Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): S. Forte, R.A. Kubik-Huch, C. LeoAbstractThe superparamagnetic iron oxide tracer Sienna+® was introduced as an alternative to the radioisotope 99Tc Nanocoll to preoperatively mark sentinel lymph nodes in breast cancer. As previously reported, this tracer causes susceptibility artifacts on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), potentially hampering the diagnostic performance of follow-up breast MRI. This short report illustrates the temporal development of these artifacts in a patient who was followed up at 6, 12, and 18 months after administr...

Publication date: 2019Source: European Journal of Radiology Open, Volume 6Author(s): Elena Vola, Camilla Russo, Antonio Macera, Walter Del Vecchio, Gianfranco Puoti, Ferdinando Caranci, Andrea ElefanteAbstractChronic Lymphocytic Inflammation with Pontine Perivascular Enhancement Responsive to Steroids syndrome (CLIPPERS) is a newly described, underestimated CNS inflammatory disorder involving predominantly the midbrain and the cerebellum. CLIPPERS pathogenesis is largely unknown, and its clinical manifestations are polymorphic and sometimes confounding. Recently clinical, radiological and pathological diagnostic criteria h...

Detection of unwarranted CT radiation exposure from patient and imaging protocol meta-data using regularized regression
ConclusionThe study developed and tested a novel, automated method for processing CT scanner meta-data to identify CT exams where patients received an unwarranted amount of radiation. Radiation safety and protocol review committees may use this technique to uncover systemic issues and reduce future incidents. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)

Clinical course of conservative management for isolated superior mesenteric arterial dissection
ConclusionsISMAD patients without peritoneal irritation can be treated conservatively if there are no signs of an aneurysm, ULP, or mesenteric ischemia. When an aneurysm or ULP sign exists, endovascular stenting was able to preserve SMA blood flow with the improvement of the dissection. (Source: European Journal of Radiology Open)
