The Graduating European Dentist: A New Undergraduate Curriculum Framework
Abstract With “The Graduating European Dentist”, ADEE provides a new approach that reflects best academic practice for European undergraduate dental education. The new suite of documents sees increased emphasis on important curriculum components such as patient safety, working as a team and patient‐centred care. There is also an increased emphasis on teaching excellence, student satisfaction and student preparedness and support. Guidance relating to methods of teaching and learning, and assessment (educational measurement), is also provided. It is anticipated that this new format will further increase accessibility a...

Challenges in the transition to clinical training in dentistry: An ADEE special interest group initial report
Conclusions from the discussion are summarised in this article. ResultsFourteen dental schools from 12 countries participated in the online survey. The included programmes had an average duration of 5.3 years (SD = 0.48), with high school or the local equivalent as the required entrance level for dentistry. The hybrid curriculum was the leading curriculum design (n = 9) followed by competence‐based curricula (n = 3), with patient treatment as the core of clinical training in every included programme. ConclusionThe pre‐clinical‐clinical transition in dentistry is a recognisable matter in dental education that r...

A Survey of tooth morphology teaching methods employed in the United Kingdom and Ireland
ConclusionDespite being core to the dental curriculum, overall minimal time is dedicated to the delivery of tooth morphology, creating a reliance on the student to learn the material. New forms of delivery including computer‐assisted learning tools should help sustain learning and previously acquired knowledge. (Source: European Journal of Dental Education)

A questionnaire ‐based study evaluating differences between dental students in Paris (F) and Malmö (SE) regarding diagnosis and treatment decisions of patients with different severity levels of periodontal diseases
ConclusionsSignificant variation between students from Paris and Malmö Dental Schools in regard to judgement and decision‐making was observed; this may in turn imply that there is still need of improving consistency amongst undergraduate educations in periodontology in Europe. A cross ‐sectional study of confidence in minor surgical skills amongst junior dentists
ConclusionsWe conclude that confidence in minor surgical procedures improves significantly when undertaking DCT OMFS posts, with the most significant improvement in confidence occurring within the first 6 months. Dental Core Trainees become significantly more confident in their surgical ability within the first 6 months when compared to GDPs with longer postgraduate experience. Evaluation of an animation tool developed to supplement dental student study of the cranial nerves
ConclusionOverall, these findings indicate that an animation demonstrating the cranial nerves in a simple, everyday functional scenario may act as a learning aid in the study of cranial nerves. (Source: European Journal of Dental Education)

Incident reporting in dentistry: Clinical supervisor's awareness, practice and perceived barriers
ConclusionThis study shows that certain demographics of supervisors had significant relationship with their awareness, attitude, perceived barriers and practice. Awareness of the policy and form was linked to the increase in supervisors’ practice, although they tend to report verbally rather than in writing. The possible negative relationship with students was the most common perceived barrier. (Source: European Journal of Dental Education)

Faculty calibration and students ’ self‐assessments using an instructional rubric in preparation for a practical examination
ConclusionsUsing an instructional rubric and conducting faculty calibration improved the process of the periodontal practical examination. Improving the examination process and practicing self‐assessments with feedback from faculty may have a positive impact on students’ performances in the examination. Comparison of weighted and composite scores for pre ‐clinical dental learners
ConclusionThe CS method produced more reliable scores, resulting in moderate agreement with the WM and major shift in students’ ranks. These findings necessitate further validity considerations before implementing the CS method and call for further studies that examine the consequences of composite measures in dental education.
