Clinical experiences with cartilage repair techniques: outcomes, indications, contraindications and rehabilitation.
This article does not intend to give a review or a comparison of currently existing surgical techniques which aim to repair symptomatic focal defects; however, it focuses on the procedures used in the everyday practice in the authors' institute, namely microfracture, mosaicplasty, autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), osteochondral allograft transplantation and biodegradable osteochondral scaffolds. It gives a brief summary of these well-described techniques, summarizes the authors' clinical experience and available data on the clinical outcome, and the rehabilitation protocol following different procedures, with a sp...

What is the role of the conservative intervention in the treatment of a torn anterior cruciate ligament?
Authors: Atik OŞ Abstract Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common and the economic burden of these injuries is high. However, the optimal management of a torn ACL of the knee is still controversial. Anterior cruciate ligament surgery is not suitable for all patients; there are some indications for non-surgical treatment with a strict neuromuscular rehabilitation program in selected patients. Neuromuscular rehabilitation is also necessary prior to ACL reconstruction. This is crucial for the primary and secondary prevention, too. PMID: 26165713 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Eklem Hast...

[A patellar giant-cell tumor with soft tissue involvement: an alternative treatment method and review of the literature].
In conclusion, giant cell tumors are difficult to treat, as they are destructive lesions with high recurrence rates. Despite reduced range of motion and muscle strength, based on our study results, we believe that our surgical treatment modality may be an alternative for the treatment of patellar giant cell tumors. [Severe cartilage loss caused by metallic anchors in surgical treatment of a Bankart lesion: report of three cases].
In conclusion, it is essential to place the suture anchors in an appropriate position and deepness. In case of any doubt, they should be removed or in non-threaded anchors, they should be inserted fully inside the glenoid with an impactor and a hammer to avoid serious cartilage loss. Sacral and pubic insufficiency fractures due to bisphosphonate treatment.
Authors: Ayanaoğlu T, Atik OŞ, Tokgöz N, Uçar M Abstract In this article, we describe a case of sacral and pubic insufficiency fractures related to long-term bisphosphonate therapy. Following termination of bisphosphonate therapy and tailoring a conservative treatment with calcium and vitamin D, the fracture healing was observed. [The effectivity of magnetic resonance imaging findings in the diagnosis of bucket handle meniscal tears].
CONCLUSION: Preoperative differentiation of reparable bucket-handle tears from irreparable is of utmost importance. As meniscal repair improves knee stability and functional results, surgical repair of meniscal injuries particularly in younger individuals who are scheduled for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction have a positive effect on clinical outcomes. [Humeral shaft nonunions: plates and nails].
CONCLUSION: Both DCP and IRIN provide satisfactory functional outcomes in the treatment of humeral shaft nonunions. Distal shaft nonunions may demonstrate a decrement in elbow motion associated with distal placement of plates. PMID: 23145758 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Eklem Hastaliklari ve Cerrahisi)

[A clinical analysis of patients undergoing fasciotomy who experienced the 2011 Van earthquake].
CONCLUSION: Compartment syndrome is one of the serious problems after the Van earthquake. The infection ratio was low, while the amputation ratio was high. The use of anticoagulants following compartment syndrome worsens the clinical presentation, increasing the intracompartmental pressure. Does tranexamic acid reduce blood loss and blood transfusion requirement in knee arthroplasty?
Authors: Atik OS Abstract Strong evidences which indicate that tranexamic acid reduces blood loss and blood transfusion requirement in patients who are scheduled for total knee arthroplasty are available. However, dose and method of administration, safety and side effects are still controversial issues. The effect of tranexamic acid on thromboembolic events and mortality is still unknown. [Long-term use of fondaparinux in major orthopedic surgery].
CONCLUSION: With the long-term use of fondaparinux, we did not observe any major hemorrhagic complications. However, further large-scale studies including control groups are required to establish the effects of long-term use of fondaparinux. Authors: Ozdemir G, Zehir S, Ozdemir BA, Sipahioğlu S, Severge U Abstract Hydatid cyst is seen an endemic disease in many countries in the world. Cysts arising from Echinococcus granulosis occur most commonly in the liver and secondly in the lungs. Primary cystic involvement in the musculoskeletal system without lung or liver involvement is very rare. Treatment consists of surgical resection. Anthelmintic medication before and after surgery can be used. In this article, we present a very rare case of 29-year-old female with hydatid cyst involving shoulder, starting from subcutaneous tissue and extending u...
