[An unusual management of advanced gonarthrosis: total knee arthroplasty with posterior approach].
Authors: Keçeci B, Küçük L Abstract In this article, we present a 68 year-old female case admitted with complaints of a painful knee and walking difficulty with simultaneous advanced gonarthrosis and a huge osteochondroma in posterior distal femur which was adjacent to the vessel and nerve structures, who was treated with a single incision via posterior approach for tumor excision and arthroplasty. Simultaneous tumor excision and arthroplasty application were scheduled and the knee joint was reached via posterior popliteal approach. Hinged knee prosthesis was applied through the same incision following...

Minimally invasive hollow trephine technique is recommended for revision of broken uncemented and extensively porous-coated monolithic femoral stems: a review of three cases.
Authors: Steno B, Necas L, Melisik M, Almasi J Abstract Revisions of fractured, uncemented and extensively porous-coated femoral stems are challenging. In this article, we report three cases of revision surgeries for broken, cementless, and extensively porous-coated femoral stems with Solution stems (DePuy, Warsaw, Indiana). In all cases, minimally invasive endofemoral revision was successfully performed without femoral osteotomy or cortical fenestration. Removal of distal broken femoral stem was performed with hollow trephine technique under fluoroscopy. For revision arthroplasty of the femoral component,...

[Arthroscopic excision of elastofibroma dorsi at scapulothoracic joint: a surgical technique].
Authors: Çakmak G, Ergün T, Şahin MŞ Abstract Elastofibroma dorsi is a rare soft tissue pseudotumor which is located at the anteroinferior aspect of the scapula. In this article, we report a 19-year-old female case who had arthroscopic marginal excision of elastofibroma dorsi at the scapulothoracic joint without recurrences during follow-up. The arthroscopic marginal excision of the elastofibroma dorsi may have good clinical results in selected cases. PMID: 25036400 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Eklem Hastaliklari ve Cerrahisi)

[A giant hydatid cyst localized in pelvis and thigh].
Authors: Ekinci Y, Duygulu F, Vatansever F, Gürbüz K Abstract A hydatid cyst is a parasitic disease which is caused by a cestode named Echinococcus and often located in the liver. Localization in the bone and soft tissue is rarely seen. In this article, we present a 64-year-old male case with a hydatid cyst located in the soft tissue of the left anterolateral aspect of the thigh. The hydatid cyst starting from the gluteal region proximally into the pelvis, the femoral head and the hip joint leading to the spread of secondary protrusio acetabuli and extending distally to the popliteal region formed a mass...

Management and retrospective analysis of primary and metastatic sacral tumors and infections: evaluation with 73 cases.
CONCLUSION: Because of the high complication rates in malign sacral tumors, we should perform wide resections with partial or total sacrectomy. Chordoma and chondrosarcoma patients should be screened closely due to a possible recurrence risk after sacrectomy while preserving the nerve roots as possible. Aggressive curettage should be combined with adjuvant methods in benign lesions due to high recurrence rates in sacral localization. Are myofibroblasts activated in idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome? an immunohistochemical study.
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicate a potential for myofibroblasts to be activated during the early phase of the disease and contribute to the onset of disease. Further studies with larger sample sizes would be of great assistance in determining the role of myofibroblasts in idiopathic CTS. [Orthopedic surgeons' view for the prevention of osteoporotic secondary fractures: a survey].
CONCLUSION: In our country, majority of patients who present with osteoporotic hip and vertebra fractures are assessed and treated insufficiently for the prevention of secondary fractures. Supporting our results with clinical studies can accelerate the development of sufficient research and treatment programs for patients with osteoporotic fractures. Effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on fracture healing in rat femural fractures with intact and excised periosteum.
CONCLUSION: According to our findings, ESWT can be used to improve fracture healing and prevent pseudoarthrosis in the treatment of open fractures with accompanying soft tissue and periosteum damage. However, further clinical studies are required to include ESWT in routine practice. PMID: 25413461 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Eklem Hastaliklari ve Cerrahisi)

Does stem length matter?
Authors: Atik OS Abstract There are still some controversial issues regarding total hip arthroplasty including cemented vs. cementless, short stem vs. long stem. A literature review on the currently published survival results of short stems is encouraging and appears to be comparable with that of traditional uncemented stems. However, only few mid-term and long-term follow-up studies are available; studies with more patients and longer follow-up periods are needed. [Primary hydatid cyst in the medial thigh: case report].
Authors: Sipahioğlu S, Koçarslan S, Zehir S Abstract Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection most frequently caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Humans can be intermediate hosts in the hydatic cyst infection. In humans, the most common location sites for hydatic cysts are the liver followed by the lungs. Primary muscle involvement located in the skeletal muscle is very rare. In this article, we present a 24-year-old male patient with primary hydatic cyst located in the medial thigh. A multilocular cystic mass was detected in the magnetic resonance imaging taken with a pre-diagnosis of soft tissue mass. Patie...

Treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the femur with combined technique.
Authors: Gülabi D, Erdem M, Ceçen GS Abstract Treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the long bones is challenging due to infection and bone resection. The aim of this case presentation is to report an alternative method for chronic osteomyelitis of the femur. We aimed to provide acute and rapid shortening at the resected site, and lengthening from the metaphyseal bone of a 22-year-old male patient who applied with pain and discharge in the right thigh due to chronic osteomyelitis, and who had undergone three surgical procedures previously. A two-stage treatment was planned. At the first stage, bone resec...

An incidental diagnosis of obturator hernia during total hip arthroplasty.
Authors: Sarıkaya B, Ataoğlu B, Esen E Abstract Obturator hernia is a rarely seen disease that frequently affects females and the elderly population. It is clinically characterized with pain generally involving the hip region, and unless suspected, its diagnosis is difficult. Another reason for pain in the hip region and orthopedic surgery is coxarthrosis. The patient should be evaluated in detail radiographically and clinically before surgery. Although preoperative clinical examinations and radiographic findings support the indication for orthopedic surgery performed due to coxarthrosis, the probability...
