European Biological Variation Study (EuBIVAS): Within- and Between-Subject Biological Variation Data for 15 Frequently Measured Proteins [Proteomics and Protein Markers]
CONCLUSIONS: In addition to new BV estimates for sTfR, this EuBIVAS substudy generated more demanding APS for frequently requested plasma specific proteins. APS for CRP should not be calculated from BV data except when CRP is used as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

Increased Inflammatory Activity in Patients 3 Months after Myocardial Infarction with Nonobstructive Coronary Arteries [Proteomics and Protein Markers]
CONCLUSIONS: Three months after the MI, the biomarker concentrations indicated greater inflammatory activity in MINOCA patients than in both MI-CAD patients and healthy controls, and a varying degree of myocardial dysfunction among the 3 cohorts. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

Direct Detection of Monoclonal Free Light Chains in Serum by Use of Immunoenrichment-Coupled MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry [Proteomics and Protein Markers]
CONCLUSIONS: FLC immunoenrichment coupled to MALDI-TOF MS enables direct detection of mFLCs and significantly increases the confirmation of abnormal serum FLC ratios over IFE and MALDI-TOF MS without FLC enrichment, thereby providing added confidence for diagnosing FLC PCDs. Diagnostic Accuracy of a High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin Assay with a Single Serum Test in the Emergency Department [Proteomics and Protein Markers]
CONCLUSIONS: The hs-cTnI assay could immediately rule out AMI in 40% of patients and ACS in >25%, with similar accuracy to hs-cTnT at the LoD. Because of its high precision at low concentrations, this hs-cTnI assay has favorable characteristics for this clinical application. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

A Bayesian Approach to Biological Variation Analysis [Informatics and Statistics]
CONCLUSIONS: The recommended Bayesian approach gives a clear picture of the degree of heterogeneity, and the ability to crudely estimate personal within-participant CVs can be used to explore relevant subgroups. Because BV experiments are expensive and time-consuming, prior knowledge and estimates should be considered of high value and applied accordingly. By including reliable prior knowledge, precise estimates are possible even with small data sets. (Source: Clinical Chemistry)

Diagnosis of Hemoglobinopathy and {beta}-Thalassemia by 21 Tesla Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry and Tandem Mass Spectrometry of Hemoglobin from Blood [Hematology]
CONCLUSIONS: We found that 21 T FT-ICR MS/MS provides a benchmark for top-down MS/MS analysis of blood Hb. The present method has the potential to be translated to lower resolving power mass spectrometers (lower field FT-ICR mass spectrometry and Orbitrap) for Hb variant analysis (by MS1 and MS2) and β-thalassemia diagnosis (MS1).
