Adjunctive bright light in non-seasonal major depression.
CONCLUSION: The study results support the use of bright light as an adjunct treatment to antidepressants in non-seasonal depression. PMID: 15527426 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Lithium - a continuing story in the treatment of bipolar disorder.
CONCLUSION: Lithium has a continuing important role in the clinical management of bipolar disorder. Its under-utilization in North America reflects opinion rather than evidence and the demonstrated anti-suicide effects should help to reignite interest in its use. Valproate in bipolar disorder: 2000 onwards.
CONCLUSION: Valproate continues to be studied in further clarification of its mechanisms, efficacy, risks, and spectrum of benefits in bipolar disorder. It is a major treatment for bipolar disorder, both in monotherapy and combination therapy regimens. PMID: 15833096 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Lamotrigine and antiepileptic drugs as mood stabilizers in bipolar disorder.
CONCLUSION: The AED are a heterogeneous group of medications with differential spectrum of efficacy in the treatment of bipolar disorder. PMID: 15833097 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Neuroleptic dysphoria: revisiting the concept 50 years later.
CONCLUSION: Neuroleptic dysphoria is a valid construct, which has significant implications for treatment and outcome. It is now clear that it relates to dopamine activities in the nigrostriatal complex. Recent research has also raised the issue of whether neuroleptic dysphoria is a variant of extrapyramidal symptoms. Meanwhile, the role of dopamine in both the genesis of neuroleptic dysphoria and addictive behaviour has raised the issue of both conditions being different facets of the schizophrenic disease process. The recent interface of addiction and psychiatry research may have opened a new science: the science of subje...

The role of dopamine in reward and pleasure behaviour--review of data from preclinical research.
CONCLUSION: Viewing the dysfunctions of the reward pathways within a broader spectrum and exploring its complex relations with the dopaminergic transmission may help understand the pathophysiology of these neuropsychiatric disorders and lead to a rational development of novel treatments. Adolescence, schizophrenia and drug abuse: a window of vulnerability.
CONCLUSION: Attention should be paid to the interaction of drug abuse and schizophrenia and an integrated treatment is needed. Dysphoria and anhedonia in schizophrenic adolescents are important factors in treatment with antipsychotic medication, both in terms of patient satisfaction and in the prevention of substance abuse. Subjective experiences on antipsychotic medications: synthesis and conclusions.
CONCLUSION: Clinicians and researchers should continue to monitor dysphorias in schizophrenia. Contributions by the authors in this supplement provide new and more refined methods for measuring subjective responses in future studies. Brain imaging research on subjective responses to psychotropic drugs.
CONCLUSION: Neuroimaging techniques added credibility to the study of subjective responses; however, further studies are required to identify the underlying anatomical and neurochemical interactions in order to enhance their applied value. Subjective well-being under the neuroleptic treatment and its relevance for compliance.
CONCLUSION: SW, under antipsychotic treatment, is a valid construct; its assessment provides an independent outcome variable, which is relevant to compliance. PMID: 15943008 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

A typical mood stabilizers: a "typical role for atypical antipsychotics.
CONCLUSION: Based on the evidence thus far it is perhaps premature to describe the atypical antipsychotics as mood stabilizers. Individual agents may eventually be able to claim this label, however, much further research is needed especially with respect to maintenance and relapse prevention. Antidepressant combinations: epidemiological considerations.
CONCLUSION: There appears to be considerable variability in the data concerning combined prescription of antidepressants, with differences arising depending on the type of physician, the type of patient or illness and the geographical area. It is also unclear how closely research findings parallel with what doctors do in everyday practice.
