CONCLUSION: The economic costs of schizophrenia are high and driven by the need for assisted living and hospitalizations, together with productivity losses. In addition, the intangible costs, such as social contacts, are also high.

Predictors of changes in needs for care in patients receiving community psychiatric treatment: a 4-year follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: Our data support the adoption of a negotiated approach in which both staff and users' views should be given equal weight when planning and providing needs-led mental health care.

Outcome of patients dropping out from community-based mental health care: a 6-year multiwave follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: Comprehensive community mental health services seem to offer good continuity of mental health care to patients with psychosis, but dedicate less attention to patients with less severe problems. Some of these patients will go on experiencing a burden of symptoms and disability, over the years.

Applications and usefulness of routine measurement of patients' satisfaction with community-based mental health care.
CONCLUSION: Repeated, routine assessments of service satisfaction have provided a clear view of the South-Verona CMHS' strengths and weaknesses; this set of information was crucial for the continuous quality improvement process in the service.

Hospital-treated psychosis and suicide in a rural community (1877-2005). Part 1: Incidence rates.
CONCLUSION: The overall local incidence rates of psychosis and suicide seem to be representative for the country at large despite frequent endogamy. The recent drop in the incidence rate of schizophrenia seems to be in agreement with several international studies.

Hospital-treated psychosis and suicide in a rural community (1877-2005). Part 2: Genetic founder effects.
CONCLUSION: The genetic impact of the founders seems to have affected the incidence rates of severe psychiatric disorders of their descendants in two ways. A founder effect is detected in organic mental disorders and schizophrenia, and it seems to run independently of that detected in affective psychotic disorders and intentional self-harm.

Schizophrenia and physical health problems.
CONCLUSION: Physical health problems in patients with schizophrenia are common, and contribute to the excess mortality rate, as well as decreasing QoL. Many adverse physical factors are malleable in such patients, and physical benefit may be gained by following practical guidelines for their monitoring and improvement.
