Costs of schizophrenia during 5 years.
CONCLUSION: The economic costs of schizophrenia are high and driven by the need for assisted living and hospitalizations, together with productivity losses. In addition, the intangible costs, such as social contacts, are also high. PMID: 17953524 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Assessing the outcome of community-based psychiatric care: building a feedback loop from 'real world' health services research into clinical practice.
CONCLUSION: The SVOP design and its methodological background were demonstrated to be appropriate for a detailed and routine assessment of outcome in the 'real world' of mental health services. PMID: 17973806 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Predicting clinical and social outcome of patients attending 'real world' mental health services: a 6-year multi-wave follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirm the need to implement naturalistic outcome studies conducted in the 'real world' services to inform decisions and strategies to be adopted in routine clinical practice. Predictors of changes in needs for care in patients receiving community psychiatric treatment: a 4-year follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: Our data support the adoption of a negotiated approach in which both staff and users' views should be given equal weight when planning and providing needs-led mental health care. PMID: 17973808 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Outcome of patients dropping out from community-based mental health care: a 6-year multiwave follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: Comprehensive community mental health services seem to offer good continuity of mental health care to patients with psychosis, but dedicate less attention to patients with less severe problems. Some of these patients will go on experiencing a burden of symptoms and disability, over the years. PMID: 17973809 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Applications and usefulness of routine measurement of patients' satisfaction with community-based mental health care.
CONCLUSION: Repeated, routine assessments of service satisfaction have provided a clear view of the South-Verona CMHS' strengths and weaknesses; this set of information was crucial for the continuous quality improvement process in the service. A multigenerational cohort study of psychosis and suicide in a rural community: incidence rates and genetic founder effects. Preface.

Hospital-treated psychosis and suicide in a rural community (1877-2005). Part 1: Incidence rates.
CONCLUSION: The overall local incidence rates of psychosis and suicide seem to be representative for the country at large despite frequent endogamy. The recent drop in the incidence rate of schizophrenia seems to be in agreement with several international studies. Hospital-treated psychosis and suicide in a rural community (1877-2005). Part 2: Genetic founder effects.
CONCLUSION: The genetic impact of the founders seems to have affected the incidence rates of severe psychiatric disorders of their descendants in two ways. A founder effect is detected in organic mental disorders and schizophrenia, and it seems to run independently of that detected in affective psychotic disorders and intentional self-harm. Predictors of changes in caregiving burden in people with schizophrenia: a 3-year follow-up study in a community mental health service.
CONCLUSION: A policy addressing the caring burden of informal caregivers beyond patients' symptoms reduction should be considered. PMID: 17973811 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Definitions of response and remission in schizophrenia: recommendations for their use and their presentation.
CONCLUSION: To show how many patients are still symptomatic at the end of study and to show the overall amount of change in both remission and responder criteria should be presented. PMID: 19132961 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Supplementum)

Schizophrenia and physical health problems.
CONCLUSION: Physical health problems in patients with schizophrenia are common, and contribute to the excess mortality rate, as well as decreasing QoL. Many adverse physical factors are malleable in such patients, and physical benefit may be gained by following practical guidelines for their monitoring and improvement.
