The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) depends on the work of the Board Members who volunteer their time for the deaf and hard of hearing community.  The Board plays an integral role in reaching out to the four corners of America and serve as important advocates as the NAD fights for equality.  Their responsibilities include ensuring that every decision of the NAD is aligned with the mission and vision of the NAD. Indiana Judges Discriminated Against Deaf Citizen
Indianapolis, Indiana – A federal court has ruled that three Indiana judges discriminated against a deaf citizen, Steve Prakel, who sought to attend court proceedings involving his mother. Prakel wanted to attend his mother’s court hearings.  He requested that the courts provide interpreters.  However, despite his multiple requests, the judges refused to provide interpreters for Prakel.  read more (Source: National Association of the Deaf)

Deaf Medical Student Sues American Heart Association
Rochester, New York -- In a lawsuit filed today in federal district court in New York, a medical student who is deaf alleges that the American Heart Association violated federal and state disability law by refusing to caption its online educational and training materials for health care providers who wish to obtain certification in basic life support and first aid.  read more (Source: National Association of the Deaf)

In honor of Women’s History Month, the NAD is excited to recognize Janice Rosen as a recipient for this month’s #NADhandwave!  Janice Rosen is the Deaf Services Librarian in the Center for Accessibility at the DC Public Library, and has been since 1993.  Not only has she ensured access at the library for nearly the entire effective period of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but she has also been a wealth of information for the deaf and hard of hearing community by sharing postings about community and library events. read more (Source: National Association of the Deaf)
