Settlement of Discrimination Suit Against Indiana Judges
Indianapolis, Indiana – The State of Indiana has agreed to a settlement payment of $124,500.00, inclusive of attorneys’ fees and costs, to resolve a lawsuit brought under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in which plaintiffs alleged that defendants did not provide sign language interpreter services to ensure effective communication when a deaf individual was a spectator in criminal court. Steven [Matt] Prakel wanted to attend a criminal court hearing in which his mother was a party.

EEOC v. FedEx
The National Association of the Deaf is proud to announce that it has intervened in a lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against FedEx Ground. The NAD is working with its co-counsel, Matthew Dietz of the Disability Independence Group and Christine Elzer of Samuel J. Cordes & Associates, to intervene on behalf of Terry Morhoff and Lourdes Deeb, two deaf women who worked for FedEx Ground without access to qualified sign language interpreters or other reasonable accommodations.

July 26, 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was passed on July 26, 1990. The ADA is a civil rights act that prohibits discrimination against deaf and hard of hearing individuals and individuals with disabilities. The ADA protects the right of deaf and hard of hearing people to have equal access to many parts of life including but not through: captioning on TV and the Internet, the right to an interpreter, the right to have jobs, and much more.
