The NAD Welcomes Two New Attorneys
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce the addition of two deaf attorneys to the Law and Advocacy Center (LAC) at our headquarters office in Silver Spring, Maryland! We welcome Zainab Alkebsi and Anna Bitencourt to the NAD legal staff. Beginning in July 2015, these two additional attorneys will enhance the NAD’s efforts in achieving equality for all deaf and hard of hearing people.

New Bilingual Position Statement Released
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) released a position statement supporting the use of bilingual language development -- the use of both American Sign Language (ASL) and English -- in educational settings with deaf and hard of hearing infants, children and youth.

Landmark Settlements Reached In Maryland and Kentucky for Deaf Prisoners
The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (WLC) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) announced today that comprehensive settlement agreements have been reached with both Maryland and Kentucky in the last several weeks concerning the proper treatment of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing prisoners by the states’ departments of corrections. The agreements settle federal litigation brought by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee in both states, along with NAD in Maryland and additional counsel listed below in each state.

Girl Scouts is Covered by Federal Disability Discrimination Law
CHICAGO – May 14, 2015 – The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday, May 8, 2015, that the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is subject to federal disability discrimination law under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The federal lawsuit was filed on August 2, 2012, by Megan Runnion, who is deaf and was 12 years old at the time. Megan was seeking to secure an American Sign Language interpreter for meetings of her Girl Scout troop.

May 2015 #NADHandwave
The NAD wishes to recognize Cathy Corrado as this month’s #NADhandwave recipient for her time and energy investing in the deaf and hard of hearing youth. Thanks to her efforts, the annual “Biztown” event which is part of the YMCA's Junior Achievement program, has helped give many local deaf and hard of hearing students an opportunity to learn about business, economics, finances and life-skills.
