Vet schools say it's tougher to recruit academic staff - even before Brexit talks
BRITAIN'S vet schools are facing tough times in recruitment as specialist positions become harder to fill and non-UK EU workers' rights remain uncertain. Brexit negotiations on EU workers have yet to begin but the effect on the academic workforce is being felt now in UK universities. Six months is typical to recruit academics and researchers from application to post, but periods stretching from an extra two months to years are not uncommon. ‘Recruitment is already being affected by Brexit, particularly to senior research positions,’ said chair of the Veterinary Schools Council, Ewan Cameron. ‘EU nationals...

Scottish welfare measures 'give with one hand and take away with the other
SCOTLAND is set to become the first administration in the UK to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses, following the introduction of a new Bill to the Scottish Parliament last week. The Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (Scotland) Bill will prohibit the use of any wild animal in a travelling circus in Scotland on ethical grounds. Roseanna Cunningham, Scotland's cabinet secretary for environment, climate change and land reform, said that the Scottish Government took animal welfare seriously: ‘The Bill we have introduced today bans the use of wild animals in travelling circuses, which is widely considere...

EU aid funding to be used for pig worming scheme in Northern Ireland
PIG farmers in Northern Ireland are being encouraged to take part in a subsidised scheme to control endoparasites in their herds. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)is using some of the £4 million one-off funding it secured last year as EU Exceptional Adjustment Aid to support a Pig Industry Competitiveness Scheme. The scheme aims to improve the quality of local pig meat and will cover the cost of in-feed medication and the blanket treatment of sows. It will also cover the cost of medication acquired from vets for the treatment of individual sows before farrowing. As part of the crite...

MORE than 100 cases of Alabama rot have now been confirmed in the UK since the first diagnosis of the disease in 2012. The new cases, which bring the UK total to 102, were confirmed by Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists and occurred in Greater Manchester, West Sussex, East Sussex and Devon. They included the first UK case to be found in a greyhound, the breed in which the disease was initially discovered in the USA. The conference aimed to progress ongoing research on the disease, whic...

Scotland plans to allow tail docking of working dogs, but 'the evidence doesn't stack up
A PROPOSAL to permit tail docking in some working dogs in Scotland has met strong resistance from across the profession. Last week Roseanna Cunningham, secretary for environment, climate change and land reform, published a package of animal welfare measures for consideration by the Scottish Parliament this summer. Among them was the proposal for new legislation to permit vets to shorten the tails (remove the end third) of any spaniels and hunt point retrievers intended for use as working dogs. The government said the intention is to reduce the number of tail injuries suffered by working dogs but the proposal has met with s...

Docking - not the end of the tale?
SCOTLAND is proud of its record on animal welfare. Its intention to ban wild animals in travelling circuses is a good example of Scotland setting standards for the rest of the UK to follow. But later this summer the Scottish parliament will vote on whether to accept a new package of welfare proposals and tail docking – banned in Scotland for 10 years – could make a comeback. For many vets and welfare experts, this is an unnecessary and retrograde step. Under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, it is illegal to shorten any dog's tail (unless it is indicated medically). This is different from the r...
