Vet schools say it's tougher to recruit academic staff - even before Brexit talks

BRITAIN'S vet schools are facing tough times in recruitment as specialist positions become harder to fill and non-UK EU workers' rights remain uncertain. Brexit negotiations on EU workers have yet to begin but the effect on the academic workforce is being felt now in UK universities. Six months is typical to recruit academics and researchers from application to post, but periods stretching from an extra two months to years are not uncommon. ‘Recruitment is already being affected by Brexit, particularly to senior research positions,’ said chair of the Veterinary Schools Council, Ewan Cameron. ‘EU nationals constitute approximately 17 per cent of the UK veterinary school workforce, and for some veterinary schools this is up to as much as 40 per cent.’ Liverpool vet school has the highest proportion in the UK and currently employs 55 EU nationals among its 136 academic staff – 40 per cent.
