Proteomic Analysis of Synovial Fluid Obtained from a Dog Diagnosed with Idiopathic Immune-Mediated Polyarthritis
This case study is to report the proteins detected by proteomic analysis of synovial fluid from a dog diagnosed with idiopathic immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA), and to compare it with healthy dogs. Synovial fluid was collected via arthrocentesis from a dog diagnosed with IMPA. Protein precipitation was performed on the synovial fluid, followed by isoelectric focusing and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The spots on the two-dimensional gels were analyzed using MALDI-TOF/MS. The results were then analyzed against the MASCOT database. (Source: Topics in Companion Animal Medicine)

Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure With Hemoptysis in a Dog Exposed to Copper Sulfate Powder
A 2-year-old male mongrel dog was presented because of the onset of dry cough. About 16 hours before, the dog had been exposed to the pesticide that the owner was spraying in the vineyard. Approximately 3 hours later an acute respiratory failure, with a rapid evolution, began. Hemoptysis and regenerative normocytic normochromic anemia arose within hours, and a pulmonary hemorrhage was diagnosed. Pulmonary hemorrhage fast led to pneumonia, as evidenced by the serial CXR findings and the developing of leukocytosis. (Source: Topics in Companion Animal Medicine)

Use of nandrolone decanoate in treatment of pure red cell aplasia secondary to diclofenac administration: A case report
Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a disorder that leads to a nonregenerative anemia that results from erythroid precursors failing to reach maturity in the bone marrow, while the numbers of mature myeloid and megakaryocytic cells remain normal. PRCA can be induced by autoimmune processes, infections, drugs, toxins, and radiation, and is diagnosed by a bone marrow cytology examination after excluding the most common causes of nonregenerative anemia. Immunosuppressive therapies are used to treat PRCA, and usually involve the use of glucocorticoids, cyclosporin, and/or azathioprine. (Source: Topics in Companion Animal Medicine)

Perioperative occlusion of a Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass secondary to a severe pyonephrosis in a Birman cat
A Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) was placed in a 10-year-old Birman cat for management of unilateral ureterolithiasis. Peroperative occlusion of the nephrostomy tube of the SUB device happened secondary to a severe pyonephrosis. Flushing of the system throught the subcutaneous shunting port was made with saline solution after clamping the urinary bladder catheter. Repetitive flushing of the device was performed daily for 3 days to be sure of the remanent patency of the catheter.Repetitive flushing of the SUB device is a successful renal-sparing treatment for pyonephrosis in a cat and may be considered as an effective t...

Autologous Platelet Concentrates as Treatment for Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head in a Dog
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a developmental disturbance that generally affects young dogs of small breeds and produces ischemic necrosis of the femoral head resulting in an incongruous and malformed joint. The most common treatment is the excisional arthroplasty of the head and femoral neck. The aim of this study is to describe the treatment of avascular necrosis in a Yorkshire dog using intra articular injections of autologous platelet concentrate. Evaluations were made at 0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 days of treatment, describing the following parameters: clinical gait analysis, perimetry, goniometry and radiograp...

Renal Amyloidosis Associated With Kartagener Syndrome in a Dog
A 4-year-old cocker spaniel, male, of 12kg body weight was presented because of the onset of polyuria or polydipsia. From the first months of its life, the dog had exhibited constant serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, productive cough, sneezing, reverse sneezing, otitis, and recurrent episodes of fever. The respiratory signs had been treated several times with antibiotics, without ever achieving a complete resolution. Clinical examination revealed normal rectal temperature (38.3 °C), increased respiratory rate (40breaths/min), a copious mucous nasal discharge and right deviation of the heart apex beat (ictus cordis)....

Companion Animal Owner Perceptions, Knowledge, and Beliefs Regarding Pain Management in End-of-Life Care
The senior companion animal is the fastest growing segment of the pet population. End-of-life care, quality of life, and pain management (PM) are extremely important to pet owners. Research into PM and end-of-life care is essential due to lack of information on owner knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. A survey was developed to gather information from owners. Surveys were developed using expert focus groups, and participants were recruited through social media. Survey validation employed emergent themes and grounded theory. Review of 166 Gunshot Injury Cases in Dogs
The study aimed to establish predilection signalment and history data and to investigate clinical findings and risk factors associated with a poor outcome in dogs with projectile injuries. A retrospective study was undertaken of 166 canine cases in which a projectile was found on radiograph in a university ′s diagnostic imaging center over a 4-year period. The study included dogs with both acute (obvious recent traumatic event) and incidental (traumatic event unknown to the owner) projectile injury. (Source: Topics in Companion Animal Medicine)

Retrospective Study (2009-2014): Perineal Hernias and Related Comorbidities in Bitches
Retrospective study based on data extracted from medical records of dogs diagnosed with perineal hernia between 2009 and 2014; medical records of bitches were selected for further analysis to determine the prevalence of perineal hernias in bitches and to investigate potential comorbidities. Perineal hernia was diagnosed in 182 dogs (174 males and 8 females; 96% and 4%, respectively). Surgical correction was performed in 6 bitches. Surgical procedures corresponded to internal obturator muscle transposition with or without polypropylene mesh reinforcement (n = 5) and semitendinosus muscle transposition flap (n = 1). (Source:...
