Pulse Oximetry and Capnometry
Respiratory dysfunction is common in veterinary patients and various techniques have been developed to rapidly and accurately monitor pulmonary gas exchange. Pulse oximetry and capnometry are tools that allow for continuous evaluation of pulmonary function. Methodology, indications, and limitations of pulse oximetry and capnometry are discussed in this article. Both techniques are useful for monitoring critically ill or anesthetized patients; however, limitations to their use exist which underscore the need for intermittent arterial blood gas analysis. Ventilator Waveforms
Ventilator waveforms are graphic representations of changes in pressure, flow, and volume within a ventilator circuit. The changes in these parameters over time may be displayed individually (scalars) or plotted one against another (pressure-volume and flow-volume loops). There are 6 basic shapes of scalar waveforms, but only 3 are functionally distinct (square, ramp, and sine). The pressure scalar is a particularly valuable tool when constant flow (e.g., volume control) modes are employed and an inspiratory pause is added. In this setting, inspection of the pressure waveform can allow determination of static, quasistatic,...

Tracheal Stent Placement for the Emergency Management of Tracheal Collapse in Dogs
Dogs with tracheal collapse may present with life-threatening upper airway obstruction. In most instances, a conservative approach to treatment including oxygen support coupled with sedation and cooling measures will relieve respiratory effort and thus relieve airway obstruction. Dogs that fail this conservative approach require endotracheal intubation to ensure a patent airway. This population of patients would benefit from a more definitive, yet palliative treatment option to acutely relieve upper airway obstruction. Placement of a self-expanding metallic stent that spans the affected portion of the trachea will acutely ...
