Intraoperative Medications Associated With Hemodynamically Significant Anaphylaxis
(Abstracted from J Clin Anesth, 35:415–423, 2016) Despite variations in definitions used, significant numbers of surgical cases are known to be complicated by anaphylaxis. This may be due to drugs such as antibiotics and neuromuscular-blocking drugs or even due to latex and disinfectants. (Source: Survey of Anesthesiology)

Emergency Manual Uses During Actual Critical Events and Changes in Safety Culture From the Perspective of Anesthesia Residents: A Pilot Study
This study aimed to assess the efficacy of emergency manuals (EMs) and other similar tools, such as context-relevant sets of cognitive aids or crisis checklists, used by anesthesia residents. Although simulations have demonstrated the effectiveness of EMs and similar tools when used by operating room (OR) teams during crises, there is a lack of information on actual clinical implementation and specific uses. Preparing Anesthesiology Faculty for Competency-Based Medical Education
(Abstracted from Can J Anaesth, 63(12):1364–1373, 2016) Competency-based medical education (CBME) is a new paradigm in medical education, the core principle of which is the resident’s demonstration of competence along a defined development continuum. Competency-based medical education requires a shift in the teaching paradigm from knowledge-focused to one that is competency based. (Source: Survey of Anesthesiology)

Simulation-Based Assessment of Anesthesiology Residents’ Competence: Development and Implementation of the Canadian National Anesthesiology Simulation Curriculum (CanNASC)
(Abstracted from Can J Anaesth, 63(12):1357–1363, 2016) The specialty of anesthesiology will adopt Competence By Design in residency developed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). Frequent and contextualized assessment of trainees is the foundational concept of competency-based medical education. (Source: Survey of Anesthesiology)

Prognosis of Prolonged Intensive Care Unit Stay After Aortic Valve Replacement for Severe Aortic Stenosis in Octogenarians
(Abstracted from J Cardiothorac Vasc Anesth 30(6):1555–1561, 2016) Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most frequent heart valve disease in octogenarians, and aortic valve replacement (AVR) remains the primary treatment for AS. This observational study conducted in the postoperative surgical intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary care facility in Paris, France, aimed to evaluate the mortality rate of octogenarians experiencing prolonged hospitalization in the ICU following cardiac surgery and to define the best cutoff for prolonged ICU length of stay (LOS).
