Neural Mechanism of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors in Improving Heart Rate Variability and Sleep Disturbance after Myocardial Infarction
Sympathetic hyperactivity and poor sleep quality are reported in myocardial infarction (MI) patients and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) can improve long-term survival in these patients. We aimed to evaluate ACEI effects on cardiac autonomic activity (CAA) and disordered sleep patterns in ambulatory rats after MI. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Shorter sleep duration is associated with reduced cognitive development at two years of age
Both short sleep duration and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are associated with poor neurocognitive development. However, the co-contributions of short sleep duration and SDB on neurodevelopment in pre-school children are relatively unknown. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Home continuous positive airway pressure for cardiopulmonary indications in infants and children
A number of reports exist regarding the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to manage obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in children, which we term ‘conventional CPAP’. In contrast, there are few reports of home CPAP use for other indications, which we have grouped under the term ‘cardiopulmonary’. The aims of this study were to (1) document cardiopulmonary indications for CPAP use in a cohort of infants and children, and (2) evaluate i ts effectiveness in this group. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Afternoon napping during pregnancy and low birth weight: the Healthy Baby Cohort Study
Although afternoon napping is very common, particularly in China, there are limited data regarding the potential health effects of afternoon napping during pregnancy on perinatal outcomes. We aimed to investigate the relationship between afternoon napping during late pregnancy and low birth weight (LBW). (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Night sleep duration trajectories and associated factors among preschool children from the EDEN cohort
Sleep duration may vary both interindividually and intraindividually over time. We aimed to identify night-sleep duration (NSD) trajectories among preschoolers and to study associated factors. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Visually detected non −rapid eye movement stage 2 sleep spindle density at age five years predicted prosocial behavior positively and hyperactivity scores negatively at age nine years
A higher density of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) spindles has been cross-sectionally associated with more efficient cortical –subcortical connectivity, superior intellectual and learning abilities, and healthier emotional and behavioral traits. In the present study, we explored to what extent sleep spindle density (SSD) at age five years could predict emotional and behavioral traits at six and nine years. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

PREDICTORS of clinical response in a double-blind placebo controlled crossover trial of gabapentin enacarbil for RESTLESS legs syndrome
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor disorder which produces sleep disturbance. Using data from a large clinical trial of gabapentin enacarbil (GEn) we sought to assess the ability of baseline, and changes from baseline, in clinical trial endpoints to predict treatment response. Sleep apnea in Machado-Joseph disease: a clinical and polysomnographic evaluation
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) or spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is the most common type of autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). Sleep disorders have been described as frequent non-motor symptoms in MJD, and with marked impairment on quality of life. However, few studies have evaluated the frequency and characteristics of sleep apnea in MJD. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Differences in sleep functioning between individuals with seasonal affective disorder and major depressive disorder in Finland
Sleep problems are commonly reported in seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the specific characteristics of sleep difficulties differ. Frequent sleep problems in MDD are insomnia and night awakenings, whereas SAD patients complain of hypersomnia and daytime sleepiness. No earlier studies have reported differences in sleep functioning between these two disorders. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Favorite odor induces negative dream emotion during rapid eye movement sleep
As connections between nightmares and various psychiatric disorders have been reported, the clinical significance of studying dream emotionality is now growing in importance. Odor presentation may be a crucial tool to study dream emotions because the olfactory bulb connects directly to the amygdala. Previous studies have demonstrated that presentation of positive/negative odors during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep affects various aspects of dreaming. Although olfactory perception can be influenced by personal experiences, the role of individual preferences in the effects of olfactory stimuli on dreaming has not yet been c...
