Unresectable recurrence malignant sacrococcygeal teratoma in children treated with chemoradiotherapy: Case report and literature review
Publication date: July–August 2019Source: Reports of Practical Oncology & Radiotherapy, Volume 24, Issue 4Author(s): Yecai Huang, Mei Feng, Jun Yin, Bingyu Fu, Jinyi LangAbstractSacrococcygeal teratoma is the most common germ cell neoplasia that consists of tissues derived from primitive germ layers. Approximately 10–20% of patients are malignant. Because of the high rate of recurrence, treatment strategies for malignant sacrococcygeal teratomas are limited. Hence, we report a case of malignant sacrococcygeal teratoma treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus adjuvant chemotherapy and review the literature. This c...

Pre-radiotherapy daily exercise training in non-small cell lung cancer: A feasibility study
ConclusionThis study demonstrated ‘proof of principle’ that daily moderate-to-high intensity cycle ergometer exercise was feasible, safe and well tolerated among newly diagnosed patients with locally advanced NSCLC undergoing concomitant chemoradiotherapy. Larger randomized controlled trials are warranted. (Source: Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy)

Radiation dose verification of an X-ray based blood irradiator using EBT3 radiochromic films calibrated using Gamma Knife machine
ConclusionsWe recommend the use of EBT3 films in routine X-ray based BI dosimetry checks. The presented method takes advantage of available radiotherapy equipment that can be efficiently used for EBT3 films calibration. The method is fast, reproducible and saves valuable medical physicist's time. (Source: Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy)

Patients’ view of the differences in topical creams for radiation dermatitis prevention. A pilot study of cosmetic properties
ConclusionsTopical agents for preventive ARD are reported by patients to show different cosmetic properties. Cosmetic properties are important when choosing topical agents for ARD prevention. Recommending those with better cosmetic profiles would improve patient adherence to treatments. (Source: Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy)

Successful treatment of refractory chylous ascites due to follicular lymphoma with very low-dose radiotherapy
Publication date: July–August 2019Source: Reports of Practical Oncology & Radiotherapy, Volume 24, Issue 4Author(s): Márcio Tavares, Sofia Ramalheira, Sérgio Chacim, Rui Henrique, Ângelo Oliveira, José Mário MarizAbstractChylous ascites is an extremely rare complication of lymphoma. Here, we discuss the case of a patient presenting with refractory chylous ascites due to a massive retroperitoneal follicular lymphoma, staged as IVB. The patient was unresponsive to chemoimmunotherapy, which prompted us to consider alternative treatment strategies. Low-dose radiotherapy was initiated and resulted in a marked decrease of...

Adoption of an incident learning system in a regionally expanding academic radiation oncology department
ConclusionsWe observed significant increases in event reporting over a 6-year period across 5 regional sites within a large academic radiation oncology department, during which time we expanded and enhanced our safety and quality program, including regional integration. Implementing an ILS and structuring a safety and quality program together result in the successful integration of the ILS into existing departmental infrastructure. Determination of initial electron parameters by means of Monte Carlo simulations for the Siemens Artiste Linac 6 MV photon beam
ConclusionsThe initial parameters especially depend on components of a linac head. The phase space file which was obtained from Monte Carlo Simulation for a linac can be used as calculation of scattering, MLC leakage, to compare dose distribution on patients and in various studies. Dosimetric comparison of conformal technique (3D) with volumetric modulated arc therapy with respect to doses obtained in the temporal lobe area in patients irradiated for brain meningioma
ConclusionApplication of VMAT in patients treated for meningioma of the brain is not related to higher doses of radiation in the temporal lobe area, compared with the conformal technique. (Source: Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy)

Skin surface markers for stereotactic body radiation therapy of sternal metastasis
Publication date: July–August 2019Source: Reports of Practical Oncology & Radiotherapy, Volume 24, Issue 4Author(s): Hossein Hemmatazad, Daniel Schmidhalter, Olgun Elicin, Daniel M. Aebersold, Evelyn HerrmannAbstractStereotactic body radiation therapy is an effective and safe treatment modality for bone metastasis which allows clinicians to accurately target lesions to high doses while minimizing dose to organs at risk. The commercially available CyberKnife® Xsight™ Spine Tracking System (Accuray, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA) tracks static skeletal structures and eliminates the need for implanted fiducial markers (FMs). Howev...
