Optimal Implementation of Intervention to Control the Self-harm Epidemic
Deliberate self-harm (DSH) of a young person has been a matter of growing concern to parents and policymakers. Prevention and early eradication are the main interventional techniques among which prevention through reducing peer pressure has a major role in reducing the DSH epidemic. Our aim is to develop an optimal control strategy for minimizing the DSH epidemic and to assess the efficacy of the controls. (Source: Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives)

The Usefulness of the Tuberculosis Skin Test and the Interferon-gamma Release Assay in the Diagnosis of Latent Tuberculosis B Infection in South Korea
South Koreans receive the bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination, which influence the result of the tuberculin skin test (TST); however, only a few studies have described the usefulness of the TST and interferon-γ release assay (IGRA) for diagnosing latent TB infection (LTBI). Therefore, our aim was to determine the usefulness of the TST and IGRA for diagnosing LTBI in a household contacts investigation. (Source: Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives)

Dentofacial and Cranial Changes in Down Syndrome
Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder produced by the (complete or partial) presence of three copies of chromosome 21 [1–4]. The syndrome is characterized by a distinctive and immediately recognizable craniofacial phenotype [5,6]. The peculiar aspect of these subjects is partly a result of developmental anomalies of the craniofacial skeleton [4,6]. Many published studies have reported relatively poor dental health practices, relatively poor oral hygiene, and high levels of periodontal disease in children with Down syndrome than in normal children [7–9]. Utilization of Laboratory Tests for Tuberculosis and Mycobacterial Disease in Korea
In this study, we aimed to investigate characteristics and trends of the utilization of laboratory tests for TB and mycobacterial diseases in private sector by analyzing National Health Insurance (NHI) database. After selecting TB or other mycobacteria related test items, we searched number and cost of them on website of Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) using the code of each test from 2007 to 2012. Evaluation and Comparison of Molecular and Conventional Diagnostic Tests for Detecting Tuberculosis in Korea, 2013
The fast and accurate diagnosis is necessary in order to control and diminish the tuberculosis (TB) patients. In Korea, TB remains a serious public health problem. We evaluated to TB diagnostic tests status on the public health department in 2013, and compared the characteristics between the tests for detecting tuberculosis for assistance with TB treatments and control. Activities of The Korean Institute of Tuberculosis
The Korean National Tuberculosis (TB) Association (KNTA) set up the Korean Institute of TB (KIT) in 1970 for the purpose of fostering research and technical activities. KNTA/KIT had successfully conducted countrywide TB prevalence survey from 1965 to 1995 with 5 years interval. Through the result of the surveys, Korea became known for a country with successful national control program. KIT developed Korea TB surveillance system and laboratory management information system, which were transferred to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after its establishment. Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever and the Current State of Vaccine Development
In February 2014, the first outbreak case of Ebola virus (Figures 1–4) was confirmed and registered in the region of Guinea (West-Africa) by the World Health Organization (WHO). By July 31, the total number of suspected and confirmed cases in the Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) outbreak had increased to 1323, including 729 deaths at a fatality rate of 55% in the southeastern area of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria [1]. The Ebola virus in Guinea showed 98% homology with the Zaire Ebola virus (ZEBOV) found in Congo and Gabon (1994–1995) [2]. (Source: Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives)

Rapid DNA extraction from dried blood spots on filter paper: Potential applications in biobanking
Dried blood spot (DBS) technology is a microsampling alternative to traditional plasma or serum sampling for pharmacokinetic or toxicokinetic evaluation. DBS technology has been applied to diagnostic screening in drug discovery, nonclinical, and clinical settings. We have developed an improvedelution protocol involving boiling of blood spots dried on Whatmanfilter paper.
