Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever and Current State of Vaccine Development
In February 2014, the first outbreak case of Ebola virus was confirmed and registered in the region occurred of Guinea (West -Africa) by WHO. By July 31st, the total number of suspected and confirmed cases in the Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF) outbreak had increased to 1 323, including 729 deaths at a fatality rate of 55% in the southeastern area of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria [1]. The Ebola virus in Guinea showed 98% homology with Zaire Ebola Virus (ZEBOV) found in Congo and Gabon (1994-1995) [2]. (Source: Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives)

Roll the Dice
In the 2014 annual meeting of the Korean Society of Mathematical Biology, the managing editor proposed an interesting idea: viewing problematic gambling as a contagious disease [1]. One article was then submitted and enlisted in the June issue of this journal [2]. As part of our efforts to imprint a unique feature to the readers of biomedical journals by publishing at least one mathematical model paper, we have included models for HIV, malaria, Vibrio vulnificus infection, pandemic influenza, nosocomial outbreaks, and food-and-mouth disease outbreaks [3–9]. Comparison of Four Serological Tests for Detecting Antibodies to Japanese Encephalitis Virus after Vaccination in Children
Several different methods are currently used to detect antibodies to Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in serum samples or cerebrospinal fluid. These methods include the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test, indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of each method in detecting vaccine-induced antibodies to JEV. (Source: Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives)

Evidence Gap on the Prevalence of Non-conventional Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Iran
Robust scientific evidence exists about the role of non-conventional risk factors in type 2 diabetes worldwide. The current epidemiological pattern of the disease in Iran suggests a precipitating role for these non-conventional risk factors. This review was performed to examine the research evidence suggesting a higher prevalence of non-conventional type 2 diabetes risk factors in Iran. Optimal Implementation of Intervention Strategies for Elderly People with Ludomania
Now-a-days gambling is growing especially fast among older adults. To control the gratuitous growth of gambling, well-analyzed scientific strategies are necessary. We tried to analyze the adequacy of the health of society mathematically through immediate treatment of patients with early prevention. (Source: Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives)

Molecular Investigation of Quinolone Resistance of Quinolone Resistance-Determining Region in Strains Isolated from Iran Using Polymerase Chain Reaction–Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism Method
The resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to the recently available antibiotic treatment has been a growing problem. The aim of the study was to determine the quinolone-resistant strains and detect the presence of mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions of the gyrA, parE, and parC genes. A New Direction of Cancer Classification: Positive Effect of Low-Ranking MicroRNAs
Many studies based on microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles showed a new aspect of cancer classification. Because one characteristic of miRNA expression data is the high dimensionality, feature selection methods have been used to facilitate dimensionality reduction. The feature selection methods have one shortcoming thus far: they just consider the problem of where feature to class is 1:1 or n:1. However, because one miRNA may influence more than one type of cancer, human miRNA is considered to be ranked low in traditional feature selection methods and are removed most of the time. Associations Between Estimated Desaturase Activity and Insulin Resistance in Korean Boys
Obesity in childhood increases the risk of obesity in adulthood, and is predictive of the development of metabolic disorders. The fatty acid compositions of various tissues, including blood, are associated with obesity and obesity-associated disorders. Thus, tracking plasma phospholipid (PL) features and metabolic parameters in young individuals may strengthen the utility of fatty acid composition as an early biomarker of future metabolic disorders.
