Collaborative development of an accelerated graduate entry nursing programme outside of traditional funding mechanisms
Financial support for students entering nurse education programmes has typically been the responsibility of Governments who make a substantial contribution to tuition and/or living costs. However, where programmes are not funded by Government bodies, students must make alternative arrangements for financial support. This paper explores how a university worked with local employers to design, recruit and deliver an accelerated graduate entry nursing programme and how this philosophy of collaboration ultimately led to local health employers providing sponsorship for students. A response to Sabatino et  al 2015 regarding Italian nurse education and practice
Sabatino et  al. (2015) in a new study of Italian nursing students' views on developing professional identity in practice provided an extraordinary insight into aspects of contemporary nurse education and practice. They have revealed nursing students' experiences in the clinical area related to factors that ei ther promoted or diminished their professional identity and professional respect. Not only have these interviews demonstrated for the first time the lived experience of Italian nursing students, moreover it has drawn attention to unresolved care deficits, and students' responses to this in a remarka ble way. First year midwifery students' experience with self-recorded and assessed video of selected midwifery practice skills at Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand
Studying undergraduate midwifery at a distance has advantages in terms of accessibility and community support but presents challenges for practice based competence assessment. Student -recorded videos provide opportunities for completing the assigned skills, self-reflection, and assessment by a lecturer. This research asked how midwifery students experienced the process of completing the Video Assessment of Midwifery Practice Skills (VAMPS) in 2014 and 2015.The aim of the survey was to identify the benefits and challenges of the VAMPS assessment and to identify opportunities for improvement from the students ’ perspectiv...

Nursing students experiences of learning about nursing through drama
The ability to understand, interact and create a caring relationship with the patient is a core component in nursing. A shift in nursing education from traditional classroom teaching towards more experiential approaches should be encouraged as this will support learning that links theory with practice. The aim of this study was to describe nursing students' experiences of learning about nursing through drama. This qualitative study was conducted at a university in Sweden. Four focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 16 nursing students and the data was analyzed using a phenomenographic approach. (Source: Nurs...

Facilitating peer based learning through summative assessment – An adaptation of the Objective Structured Clinical Assessment tool for the blended learning environment
Adapting a course from face to face to blended delivery necessitates that assessments are modified accordingly. In Australia the Objective Structured Clinical Assessment tool, as a derivative from the Objective Structured Clinical Examination, has been used in the face-to-face delivery mode as a formative or summative assessment tool in medicine and nursing since 1990. The Objective Structured Clinical Assessment has been used at Charles Darwin University to assess nursing students' simulated clinical skills prior to the commencement of their clinical placements since 2008. Diagnosing and treating Enquiry Based Learning fatigue in Graduate Entry Nursing students
The use of student directed study approaches such as Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) in the design and implementation of Graduate Entry Nursing Circular is well established. The rational relates to the maximisation of graduate attributes such as motivation to learn, the ability to identify, search and assimilate relevant literature and the desire to take ownership of the direction and pace of learning. Existing alongside this however, is the observation that students remain under confident in the application of knowledge to a clinical context and frustrated with learning approaches which do not appear directly related to impr...

Nursing students ’ perceptions of preparation to engage in patient education
Patient teaching is a key component of graduate nursing practice. Nurses sometimes believe that their undergraduate teaching does not prepare them to engage in effective patient teaching. In addition, nursing students often do not use teaching resources when engaging in patient teaching. The aim of this focused ethnographic study was to determine if students in a CBL/PBL based learning undergraduate nursing program engage in patient teaching when they are in the clinical area. Focus groups and shorter individual interviews were used to ensure in-depth data collection. (Source: Nurse Education in Practice)

‘Pre-Run, Re-Run’: An innovative research capacity building exercise
Within higher education it is ironic that experienced and novice researchers rarely take the opportunity to come together to share their research – whether these be to discuss findings, puzzles or developing projects. Within this paper, an innovative strategy building on these assumptions is described. It is entitled: ‘Pre-run, Re-run’ and is a learning community where specific processes are modelled by all to help build professional co mmunication, collegial respect, and scholarship. Our evaluation showed that there is value in bringing together researchers especially when they have diverse profiles.
