Ultrasound-Guided Transcutaneous Needle Biopsy of the Base of the Tongue and Floor of the Mouth From a Submental Approach
Limited data exist regarding the feasibility of ultrasound-guided transcutaneous biopsy of the base of the tongue and floor of the mouth. This retrospective study reviewed 8 cases with lesions in the base of the tongue or floor of the mouth that were biopsied by fine-needle aspiration. Core biopsy was also needed in 1 case. All biopsies were technically successful, and all yielded squamous cell carcinoma. One biopsy yielded a false-positive result, as subsequent resection yielded high-grade dysplasia with no invasion. The other biopsy results were considered true-positive based on subsequent pathologic examinations (2 case...

Compression Real-time Elastography for Evaluation of Salivary Gland Lesions: A Meta-analysis
Conclusions— Real-time elastography is a novel supplementary adjunct to conventional sonography for evaluation of salivary gland lesions. However, its overall accuracy is less promising, and biopsy may still be necessary in routine clinical practice. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Second-Trimester Sonographic Thymus Measurements Are Not Associated With Preterm Birth and Other Adverse Obstetric Outcomes
Conclusions— Sonographic assessment of the second-trimester fetal thymus did not identify patients at increased risk for preterm birth, SGA, and pregnancy-related hypertension. Routine thymus measurements during the second-trimester anatomic scan are not clinically useful for prediction of preterm birth and other adverse outcomes. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Comparison of the Effect of Maternal Rest in Alternative Lateral Decubitus Positions on the Amniotic Fluid Index: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions— Maternal rest in the right lateral decubitus position does not seem to either increase or decrease the AFI, and resting alone does not increase the AFI in the short term. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Outcomes of an Advanced Ultrasound Elective: Preparing Medical Students for Residency and Practice
Conclusions— The longitudinal undergraduate medical education ultrasound elective produced physicians who were more likely to seek additional training in residency, evaluate themselves as more proficient, and use ultrasound in their clinical practice. Early training in bedside ultrasound during undergraduate medical education yields physicians who are better prepared for integration of ultrasound into clinical practice. Assessment of Left Ventricular Dissipative Energy Loss by Vector Flow Mapping in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease
Conclusions— Impaired blood flow efficiency was detected in patients with ESRD by using dissipative energy loss derived from vector flow mapping. The energy loss value could be a novel parameter for evaluating the ventricular workload of uremic hearts in terms of fluid mechanics. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Sonographic Detection of Accessory Adrenal Tissue in Neonates
Conclusions— Accessory adrenal tissue can be identified in the suprarenal area in neonates with high-resolution sonography. Radiologists and sonographers caring for neonates should be aware of this finding and not confuse it with disease. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Image-Derived Assessment of Left Ventricular Mass in Fetal Myocardial Hypertrophy by 4-Dimensional Echocardiography: An In Vitro Study
Conclusions— In this controlled in vitro study, high-resolution 4-dimensional echocardiography was shown to accurately assess LV mass and have the potential to evaluate fetal myocardial hypertrophy. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Sonography and Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Preoperative Diagnosis of Infected Nonunions
Conclusions— Contrast-enhanced sonography can visualize the vascularity of nonunions in real time, while quantification software allows for a semiobjective evaluation of bone perfusion. The correlations of both quantitative contrast-enhanced sonography and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI with microbiological results show their high value for differentiation of infected from aseptic nonunions. Assessment of Measurement Repeatability and Reliability With Virtual Touch Tissue Quantification Imaging in Cervical Lymphadenopathy
Conclusions— For SWV measurement by VTQ imaging, the repeatability was 19.4%, and reliability was excellent. However, caution is warranted in the use of VTQ imaging for superficial soft cervical lymph nodes, as both a superficial location and a soft composition tend to be characterized by low reliability of SWV findings.
