Diagnostic Performance of Shear Wave Elastography for Predicting Esophageal Varices in Patients With Compensated Liver Cirrhosis
Conclusions— In patients with compensated cirrhosis, liver stiffness measured by SWE is a new effective noninvasive diagnostic tool for predicting the presence of esophageal varices. It is more accurate than the platelet count/spleen diameter ratio, especially in patients without splenomegaly. In addition, the SWE value was the only effective independent factor for predicting high-risk esophageal varices. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Delayed Absorption of Oxidized Cellulose (Surgicel) in Post-Thyroidectomy Patients
Delayed absorption of oxidized cellulose (Surgicel; Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, NJ) may mimic a pseudoabscess or a recurrent mass on sonography after tumor surgery. Here we present 3 cases of thyroidectomy in which Surgicel was still apparent on sonography after 26 to 47 months of follow-up. We show sonographic findings and discuss the utility of sonography for diagnosis of delayed absorption of Surgicel in post-thyroidectomy patients. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Sonography of Responsive Versus Nonresponsive Ectopic Pregnancies
This case series describes changes in size, vascularity, and cul-de-sac fluid in 30 patients with ectopic pregnancies who were treated with systemic methotrexate. Pretreatment and posttreatment transvaginal sonography of the ectopic pregnancies was performed with color Doppler imaging, and the images were assessed for changes in size, vascularity, and cul-de-sac free fluid. There was a trend for nonresponders to show increased vascularity on serial examinations, although this finding was also seen in a single responder. There was also a trend for nonresponders with increased vascularity to be associated with a greater incr...

Construction of 3-Dimensional Printed Ultrasound Phantoms With Wall-less Vessels
Ultrasound phantoms are invaluable as training tools for vascular access procedures. We developed ultrasound phantoms with wall-less vessels using 3-dimensional printed chambers. Agar was used as a soft tissue–mimicking material, and the wall-less vessels were created with rods that were retracted after the agar was set. The chambers had integrated luer connectors to allow for fluid injections with clinical syringes. Several variations on this design are presented, which include branched and stenotic vessels. The results show that 3-dimensional printing can be well suited to the construction of wall-less ultrasound p...

Percutaneous Ultrasound-Guided TOPAZ Radiofrequency Coblation: A Novel Coaxial Technique for the Treatment of Recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis--Our Experience
We describe a novel technique of ultrasound-guided percutaneous coblation with a lateral heel approach. Advantages include precise targeting of the plantar fascia by direct dynamic visualization of the coblation tip, a true percutaneous approach with a needle skin puncture (<5 mm), and preservation of the plantar fat pad by using a lateral heel approach. Modeling, Production, and Testing of an Echogenic Needle for Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks
In conclusion, we chose a model for the design of an echogenic needle and modeled it on the basis of a solution to the Helmholtz equation. A prototype needle was tested in a water bath and compared to the model prediction. After verification of our model, we designed an 18-gauge needle, which performed better than an existing echogenic needle (Pajunk) at 60° of insonation. Our needle will require further testing in human trials. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Detection of Intraneural Median Nerve Microvascularity Using Contrast-Enhanced Sonography: A Pilot Study
Conclusions— These pilot results represent early evidence that contrast-enhanced sonography can be used to image median nerve vascularity. Liver Fibrosis Evaluation Using Real-time Shear Wave Elastography in Hepatitis C-Monoinfected and Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Hepatitis C-Coinfected Patients
Conclusions— Shear wave elastography of the liver is an effective noninvasive predictor of liver fibrosis in patients with HCV. There was no significant difference between monoinfected and coinfected patients; hence, the same cutoff values can be used for both groups. Combination of SWE with the fibrosis-4 score leads to higher accuracy, although at the expense of inconclusive results in some patients. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)
