A review of corneal imaging methods for the early diagnosis of pre-clinical Keratoconus
DiscussionCorneal assessment techniques, with the ability to characterise both the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces, are invaluable in the diagnosis of pre-clinical KC. Reflection based and elevation based corneal imaging systems should be used in conjunction with other assessments such as higher order aberration measuring systems to improve sensitivity and reliability in the diagnosis of pre-clinical KC. Ultra high resolution ultrasound can detect pre-clinical KC. The ability to asses both the epithelium and endothelium makes anterior surface optical coherence tomography a superior technique for pre-clinical KC dia...

Physicochemical stability of contact lenses materials for biomedical applications
ConclusionNo significant alterations were observed in the physicochemical structure of the materials after dehydration and rehydration showing a good stability of their components. The strong water plasticizing effect in the silicone hydrogel lens materials improves flexibility and chain mobility and may should be considered for other biomedical applications.

Relationship between refractive correction, visual symptoms, and optical device selection for low-vision patients in Taiwan
ConclusionsRefractive correction is necessary for the treatment of patients’ visual symptoms and also for the prescription of low-vision aids.

Reading eye movements in traumatic brain injury
ConclusionReading eye movement performance using ReadAlyzer was found to be decreased in traumatic brain injury.

Patient selection to optimize near vision performance with a low-addition trifocal lens
ConclusionsThe mean corneal power, irregular astigmatism, and centration from vertex normal should be considered for optimizing the near visual performance with this MIOL.ResumenObjetivoValorar el impacto de las variables biométricas oculares sobre el rendimiento visual con una lente intraocular trifocal de baja adición (MIOL).MétodosEstudio observacional retrospectivo que incluyó 34 ojos. Las variables preoperatorias medidas incluyeron potencia corneal media (Km), astigmatismo regular corneal (AR), profundidad de la cámara anterior (ACD), longitud axial (AXL), astigmatismo irregular total (AI), aberración esférica ...

The relationship between clinical measures of aniseikonia and stereoacuity before and after LASIK
ConclusionBinocular function improved in all groups after LASIK except in binocular myopes. In general, binocular function was still low compared with the control group at six months postoperatively. It is unclear why binocular function improved in the binocular astigmats.

The effects of two longpass filters on visual performance
ConclusionsDrive lenses are found to maintain or improve some visual functions compared to the clear lens. The improvement of mesopic visual acuity, visual acuity under glare, and contrast sensitivity is mainly attributed to the reduction of intraocular light scattering as a consequence of the total light attenuation in the spectral range below the cutoff.

Comparison of open-ended and close-ended questions to determine signs and symptoms of eye problems among children
ConclusionParents reported more signs and symptoms of eye problems among their children through close-ended questions (regardless of gender) and more diversified categories through open-ended question in this study suggested that different communication approaches might be needed in clinical practice between those who requested specific appointment and those attending screening or routine assessment. The discrepancy might imply the importance to enhance the parent’s role in preventive eye care. Effective communication between eyecare providers and parents has the potential to improve paediatric eyecare delivery.ResumenAn...

Does an iPad fixation disparity test give equivalent results to the Mallett near fixation disparity test?
ConclusionAlthough the measured differences between the instruments are not significant in a Wilcoxon analysis, a Bland & Altman approach shows them to be in some cases clinically unacceptable, therefore the instruments should not be used interchangeably. Previous research indicates that the Mallett unit performs reasonably well at detecting symptomatic individuals and determining a prismatic correction that is likely to be helpful. Further research is required to determine the performance of the iPad test in these functions and to assess the reproducibility of both instruments.ResumenAntecedentesSe han desarrollado divers...

Advances in diagnostic applications for monitoring intraocular pressure in Glaucoma: A review
Publication date: Available online 10 August 2019Source: Journal of OptometryAuthor(s): Irene Sanchez, Raul MartinAbstractContinuous intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring for improving glaucoma diagnosis and treatment has remained a challenge for the past 60 years because glaucoma is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Several devices with different measurement principles and recently developed biosensors with semiconductor materials offer exciting properties. However, none of these devices for continuous IOP monitoring have been fully integrated into clinical practice, primarily due to technical ...

Ocular surface response and subjective symptoms associated to lens care solutions in Palestine
ConclusionThe combination of Bioxifilcon-B hydrogel contact lenses and solution containing PHMB, PAPB and Phx-disinfectants induced a significant increase in corneal staining after 2 h of CL-wear with a higher severity when the PHMB-based solution was used, while the PQ-1 + Alexidine-based solution did not. Only the PHMB-based solution triggered a significant change in subjective symptoms which might which suggests that it might be related to the severity of staining rather than the induction of staining.
