A Delphi study to develop practical diagnostic guidelines for visual stress (pattern-related visual stress)
Conclusions The strongest diagnostic criteria are combined in a diagnostic tool. This is proposed as a guide for clinical practice and further research. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

The Enright phenomenon. Stereoscopic distortion of perceived driving speed induced by monocular pupil dilation
Conclusions Our results are the first to show a measurable change in driving behaviour following monocular pupil dilation and support predictions based on the Enright phenomenon. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

Botulinum toxin for treatment of restrictive strabismus
Conclusion Vertical deviation was observed in half of the sample. The most frequent deviation was secondary to cataract surgery and high myopia. Treatment with botulinum toxin was successful in one-third of the patients at the end of follow-up. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

Femtosecond laser-assisted sub-Bowman keratomileusis versus laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis to correct myopic astigmatism
Conclusions Both FSBK and LASEK are safe and effective procedures to correct moderate to high myopic astigmatism. Slightly better visual and refractive results were observed in FSBK-treated eyes in a 6-month follow-up. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

Influence of different types of astigmatism on visual acuity
Conclusions VA is correlated with the blur strength in a different way for each type of astigmatism, depending on the accommodative demand. VA is better when one of the focal lines lie on the retina irrespective of the axis orientation; accommodation favors this situation. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

Visual fatigue while watching 3D stimuli from different positions
Conclusion This results support a mixed model, combining a model based on the visual angle (related to viewing distance) and another based on the oculomotor imbalance (related to visual direction). This mixed model could help to predict the distribution of seats in the cinema room ranging from those that produce greater visual comfort to those that produce more visual discomfort. Also could be a first step to pre-diagnosis of binocular vision disorders. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

Electrophysiological responses from intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells are diminished in glaucoma patients
Conclusions The results demonstrate successful ERG recording of ipRGCs from advanced glaucoma patients, with marked reductions in amplitude, although not implicit time, compared with normal subjects. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

A systematic review of controlled trials on visual stress using Intuitive Overlays or the Intuitive Colorimeter
Publication date: Available online 11 July 2016 Source:Journal of Optometry Author(s): Bruce J.W. Evans, Peter M. Allen Claims that coloured filters aid reading date back 200 years and remain controversial. Some claims, for example, that more than 10% of the general population and 50% of people with dyslexia would benefit from coloured filters lack sound evidence and face validity. Publications with such claims typically cite research using methods that have not been described in the scientific literature and lack a sound aetiological framework. Notwithstanding these criticisms, some researchers have used more rigorous...

Self versus examiner administration of the Ocular Surface Disease Index ©
Conclusion There was no clinically significant difference in OSDI score between SG and EG administration, however having instructions provided with EG administration affected variability of scores in the older group more than the younger group. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

Parents ’ awareness and perception of children's eye diseases in Nigeria
Conclusion Parents are aware of common eye diseases in children but have wrong perception of their causes. Programs to increase public awareness of causes of eye problems and harmful effects of self medication are advocated for to expose inherent dangers. (Source: Journal of Optometry)

The potential role of neuropathic mechanisms in dry eye syndromes
Publication date: Available online 16 July 2016 Source:Journal of Optometry Author(s): Charles W. Mcmonnies Dry eye syndromes can involve both nociceptive and neuropathic symptoms. Nociceptive symptoms are the normal physiological responses to noxious stimuli. Neuropathic symptoms are caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system and can be the result of hypersensitisation of peripheral or central corneal and conjunctival somatosensory nerves. For example, inflammation could induce neuroplastic peripheral sensitisation of the ocular surface or lid wiper and exacerbate nociceptive symptoms. Neuropa...
