Determination of baseline bone mineral density using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in Suffolk-Dorset hybrid ewes
The objective of the present study was to determine the baseline bone mineral density values in 26 adult intact Suffolk-Dorset hybrid ewes using a Lunar Prodigy DPX x-ray bone densitometer. The DEXA scans of the femur, lumbar spine (L3-L6) and calcaneus were obtained. Because of the low variability between the scans for the lumbar vertebrae and calcaneus in the first two animals, only two scans were obtained for the remaining animals of the study. The femoral scans were rejected due to high variability between the scans. The BMD was calculated using the standard GE antero-posterior human spine acquisition software. The bon...

Anthelmintic activity of Moringa oleifera seed aqueous and ethanolic extracts against Haemonchus contortus eggs and third stage larvae
This study evaluated the anthelmintic potential of Moringa oleifera seed ethanolic and aqueous extracts against H. contortus eggs and infective stage larvae (L3s). The efficacy of five extract concentrations (0.95, 1.95, 3.9, 7.8, and 15.6mg/mL) were tested through egg hatch assay and larval motility test. Phytochemical tests were conducted to detect the different plant secondary metabolites in the extracts. In the ovicidal assay, the ethanolic and aqueous extracts showed 95.89% and 81.72% egg hatch inhibition at 15.6mg/mL, respectively. The ovicidal activity of 15.6mg/mL ethanolic extract was comparable with that of alben...

Associations between milking practices, somatic cell counts and milk postharvest losses in smallholder dairy and pastoral camel herds in Kenya
This study investigated the relationship between milking practices, mastitis as well as milk somatic cell counts (SCC) and the effects of high SCC on milk production and post-harvest losses (PHL) in smallholder dairy (n =64) and pastoral camel (n =15) herds in Kenya. Data collected included milking practices, mastitis test on udder quarters (n =1236) and collection of milk samples for laboratory analyses: SCC, detection of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species. Production losses were computed as a proportion of cows and herds with SCC (>200,000cells/ml) and PHL as quantity of milk exceeding 4×105 cells/ml...

Effects of Yunnan Baiyao on blood coagulation parameters in beagles measured using kaolin activated thromboelastography and more traditional methods
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2017 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine Author(s): Albert Lee, Søren R. Boysen, Jillian Sanderson, Cathy Wagg, Serge Chalhoub Yunnan Baiyao is anecdotally widely used in veterinary medicine for its pro-coagulation properties. There are no studies determining its effect on clotting tests. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of oral Yunnan Baiyao (YB) on hemostasis by measuring coagulation via kaolin activated citrated whole blood thromboelastography (TEG), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fi...
