Detection of variant infectious bronchitis viruses in broiler flocks in Libya
Publication date: June 2014 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine, Volume 2, Issue 1 Author(s): Faez Awad , Matthew Baylis , Kannan Ganapathy A number of broiler flocks with respiratory disease and high mortality in five broiler farms in Libya were sampled for detection of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Twelve IBV strains from these farms were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and differentiated by nucleotide sequencing of the hypervariable region of the S1 gene. A pair-wise comparison of the sequences showed two distinctive patterns. Those from farms ...

A comparative study on the use of real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and standard isolation techniques for the detection of Salmonellae in broiler chicks
This study was carried out to compare between conventional cultural isolation methods and real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique for the detection of Salmonella in broiler chicks. About 120 livers and intestinal contents samples were collected from 1800day-old imported and local broiler chicks. The incidence of Salmonellae among imported chicks was 11.67% compared to 21.67% among local chicks using conventional cultural isolation methods. Salmonella newport (S. newport) showed the highest incidence rate in imported chicks, while Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium were frequently detected in l...

Molecular genotyping of the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) isolated from Broiler Flocks in Egypt
Publication date: June 2014 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine, Volume 2, Issue 1 Author(s): Sara Abdel Mawgod , Abdel Satar Arafa , Hussein A. Hussein Re-emergence of highly virulent forms of IBDV has been the cause of significant economic losses. In present study, 52 bursa samples were assayed using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for IBDV targeting VP2 gene. Out of the tested samples 20 were positives. Eleven IBDV-positive samples were selected for further isolation and characterization. Histopathological analysis of the bursa revealed necrosis, presence of de...

Staphylococcal species associated with bovine mastitis in the North West of Iran: Emerging of coagulase-negative staphylococci
This study demonstrated that CoNS, especially S. haemolyticus and S. chromogenes, were predominant and thus be considered as emerging pathogens causing mastitis in the North West of Iran. Our results also revealed that the gap PCR-RFLP was useful for identifying staphylococcal isolates derived from bovine mastitis at species level. This study was conducted to assess the occurrence of chlamydiae in asymptomatic birds from two species of wild birds (Cattle Egret and Hoopoe) in Egypt. In the present study Chlamydiaceae was analyzed using Giemsa stain, Giménez stain, fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and PCR. The results of these techniques were compared with CFT for detecting Chlamydia psittaci antibodies among the examined birds. The results reveal that 96.4%, 81.8%, 89.1%, 80.0% and 58.2% of the examined samples were positive for chlamydiosis using PCR, Giemsa stain, Giménez stain, FA, and CFT respectively among Hoopoe. The percentages were 90.6%, 77....
