Evaluation of oxidative stress in caprine bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of pneumonic and normal lungs
Publication date: Available online 9 November 2017 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine Author(s): T.A. Jarikre, G.O. Ohore, A.A. Oyagbemi, B.O. Emikpe Research in the area of oxidative stress in pneumonic pathology still requires attention in small ruminants especially with the use of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) which may be a more sensitive indicator of respiratory diseases than blood. This investigation evaluates the role of oxidative stressin the pathogenesis of caprine pneumonia using BAL fluid (BALf) from healthy and pneumonic goats. A BALf from 192 goats (whose pneumonic histopathol...

Non-invasive in vivo imaging of fluorescence-labeled bacterial distributions in aquatic species
Publication date: Available online 10 November 2017 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine Author(s): S. Ramachandran, S. Thiyagarajan, G. Dhinakar Raj, A. Uma In vivo imaging is becoming an advanced tool for noninvasive distribution of longitudinal small animals. However, the aquatic species have been limited to the optical imaging of noninvasively tracking on pathogen distribution. The purpose of this study was to develop shell-less fish and shrimp models of non-invasive in vivo imaging technique for visualization of pathogens. This experiment was utilized Escherichia coli, Edwardsiella tar...

Enhanced electroscalpel incisional wound healing potential of honey in wistar rats
This study evaluated comparative incisional wound healing potential of honey in wound created with electroscalpel and cold scalpel. The study used twelve (12) adult male albino rats (130 ± 20 g), randomly grouped into Electro-cautery (n = 6) and Cold scalpel (n = 6). Each rat had three full thickness (6 mm diameter) skin wounds (a, b and c) created on its dorsum with either Electroscalpel (ES) or Cold blade scalpel (CS), and treated topically with Silver sulphadiazine (SSD, wound a), untreated (control, wound b) and Bee honey (H, wound c). The wounds were evaluated for gross (exudation, edema, hyperemia, c...

Field evaluation and confirmation of acute peste des petits ruminant outbreak in a flock of West African dwarf goats in Ibadan, Nigeria
This study utilised epidemiological, haematological, pathological findings and serological detection of specific antibodies to evaluate and confirm a peste des petit ruminants (PPR) outbreak in a herd of west African dwarf (WAD) goats in Ibadan, Nigeria. The morbidity and mortality rates post exposure (PE) were 96% and 60% respectively. Laboratory analyses revealed significant differences (P <0.05) in mean values of the haematological and serum biochemical indices between the PE and control groups. The PE group experienced a significant (P <0.05) increase in white blood cell (WBC), lymphocyte and monocytes af...

Combining a joint health supplement with tibial plateau leveling osteotomy in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture. An exploratory controlled trial
Publication date: Available online 6 October 2017 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine Author(s): Filippo M. Martini, Anna Brandstetter de Bellesini, Alda Miolo, Laura Del Coco, Francesco P. Fanizzi, Antonio Crovace Canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) is a very common pathology. Surgical stabilization is the first choice treatment, although it does not fully eliminate the increased risk of osteoarthritis. This preliminary study was carried out to explore whether a newly formulated joint health supplement would benefit metabolic, clinical and radiographic changes in dogs with ...

The effect of tail paint formulation and heifer behavior on estrus detection
Publication date: Available online 10 August 2017 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine Author(s): Cassandra S. Skenandore, Felipe C. Cardoso Although heifers can have better conception rates than cows, they are still subject to poor estrus detection and economic losses from reduced reproductive efficiency. Tail paint has been successful in identifying estrus, but behaviors such a licking or rubbing have been believed to remove the paint and lead to false-positives. To investigate tail paint utilization and potential relationships among behaviors, eighteen Holstein heifers were randomly assign...

A controlled study to investigate anti-diarrhoeal effect of the stem-bark fractions of Terminalia avicennioides in laboratory animal models
Publication date: Available online 26 May 2017 Source:International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine Author(s): Mohammed Musa Suleiman, Balkisu Banke Oyelowo, Ahmed Abubakar, Mohammed Mamman, Kamar-deen Taiwo Bello The study was conducted to evaluate the anti-diarrhoeal activity of the fractions of the stem-bark of Terminalia avicennioides in laboratory animal models. The effect of different concentrations (1.0×10−3, 2.0×10−3, 4.0×10−3 and 8.0×10−3 mg/mL) of the aqueous methanol (AMF), ethyl acetate (EAF) and hexane (HXF) fractions of T. avicennioides were tested against spontaneous and acetylc...

Endoscopic diagnosis and management of an unusual nasal foreign body in a mare
This report describes -for the first time- a case of a 4-year-old Arabian-cross mare having unilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge with epistaxis and exercise intolerance. Clinical signs, radiography and endoscopic examination revealed the presence of a tooth fragment (foreign body) embedded in the ventral valve of the left nasal cavity. The foreign body was successfully removed using alligator forceps under endoscopic guidance. (Source: International Journal of Veterinary Science and Medicine)

Effects of rumen-protected methionine and choline supplementation on vaginal discharge and uterine cytology of Holstein cows
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding rumen-protected methionine and choline pre – and postpartum on reproduction of Holstein cows. Seventy-two Holstein cows were randomly assigned to four treatments from 21days before calving to 30days in milk (DIM): supplementation with rumen-protected methionine (MET; n=20, received 0.08% of the dry matter (DM) of the diet/d as methionine, Smartamine M® to a Lys:Met=2.9:1), rumen-protected choline (CHO; n=17, received 60g/d choline, Reassure), both rumen protected methionine and choline (MIX; n=19, received 0.08% of the DM of the diet/d as methionine to ...

Hemoperitoneum secondary to cecocolic dilation in a pregnant mare
In this report, a pregnant mare was diagnosed with hemoperitoneum secondary to cecocolic dilatation, due to corn ingestion. The protocol for clinical treatment and tests varies in similar reported cases. Due to this, our report discusses the outcome of a clinical case and suggests a medical protocol -based on evidence – for treatment in a pregnant mare. The treatment was aimed to stop the bleeding, while normalize or maintain a stable blood pressure and provide supportive therapy. The mare presented colic pains due to fermentation of the corn, which were solved in few hours. The final abdominal ultrasonogram showed intra...
