A closed loop audit of the consenting process for elective large bowel resections against royal college of surgeons (RCS) guidance
Aims: In November 2016, the RCS published new guidance on consent, reflecting a change in UK law following the landmark ‘Montgomery vs Lancashire Board’ court case (MLBC). We aimed to audit the documentation of consent for elective large bowel resections (ELBR) at our hospital. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

A series of audit cycles to improve patient safety following the reconfiguration of a surgical assessment unit – Make changes meaningful
Aim: Royal College of Surgeons guidance outlines safe practice in identification of high-risk emergency patients. After reconfiguration of our surgical assessment unit (SAU), a series of audit-cycles were undertaken to assess and improve patient safety. We have reviewed the effectiveness of suggested changes to practice. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

A 4-point checklist to improve theatre utilisation and turnaround time and reducing costs
Aim: This audit aimed to improve theatre efficiency by evaluating and addressing delays to an orthopaedic theatre turnaround time (TAT) and therefore reduce theatre costs. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Length of stay after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Peterborough city hospital
Aims: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the ‘gold-standard’ treatment1 for gallbladder disease and hence has become a ubiquitous surgical procedure world-wide2. It has been shown to be an effective day-case (DC) procedure in more than 90% of patients3. The aim of this audit was to quantify the DC rate and to identify the potential factors leading to prolonged length of stay (LoS) for LC. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Audit on the quality of general surgical handover on admission
Aim: The European Working Time Directive has elevated the need for the quality of handover to be improved and regulated. The aim of this closed loop audit was to investigate our unit ’s compliance with the minimal data set required by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) guideline. Automating the processing of data in research. A proof of concept using elasticsearch
We present a method for mass data analysis and refinement using the programming language PHP and a database engine “Elasticsearch” to automatically “read” and search PDF documents. ElasticSearch allows for very rapid evaluation of this data, meaning complex statistics could be performed very quickly for a large body of data. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

An audit on fasting surgical patients on the trauma list: A retrospective and prospective analysis on fasting surgical trauma patients
Aim: Guidelines recommend fasting patients for 6 hours before procedures to prevent aspiration. Prolonged fasting increases postoperative problems. Giving carbohydrate drinks 2 hours before procedures is safe and can reduce prolonged fasting. The aim of this audit is to assess the fasting duration of patients on the surgical trauma list (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Single use negative pressure dressing for reduction in surgical site infection following emergency laparotomy (SUNRRISE)
Aim: To assess whether use of single-use negative pressure dressing (SUNPD) in adult patients undergoing emergency laparotomy results in lower rates of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) at 30-days, compared to conventional dressings. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Improving the abscess patient journey in an east london district general hospital
Aim: Current NICE guidance recommends same-day admission for urgent incision and drainage of most subcutaneous abscesses encountered on the general surgical take. Given the current pressures on surgical inpatient beds we wanted to investigate the feasibility of this recommendation and to explore ways to improve its implementation. Sticking to the handover! A regional audit and quality improvement of weekend handover in acute general surgical units in northern ireland
Aim: Good handover between teams is crucial in ensuring safe, effective and patient-centred care. A survey of surgical trainees in Northern Ireland (NI) (n=62 respondents) found that only 13% had received formal training in handover practice. A regional audit of acute surgical handover practice was performed and Quality Improvement (QI) methods used to evaluate potential models of improved and standardised weekend handover. Standards to audit handover were derived from reports published by the RCSE, RCP, and BMA. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)

Current rate of laparoscopic appendicectomy at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow
Aim: The World Society of Emergency Surgery guidelines state that an initial laparoscopic approach should be used for appendicectomy. The 2012 National Appendicectomy Audit revealed a 66.3% initial laparoscopic approach and a normal histopathology appendicectomy rate of 20.6%. This audit aimed to complete the audit cycle and determine current laparoscopic appendicectomy rate and normal appendicectomy rate. The data presented in this abstract is of that obtained at the authors ’ centre which participated in the Right Iliac Fossa Treatment national audit. (Source: International Journal of Surgery)
