An unusual case of acute kidney injury due to poisoning with blue stone
Publication date: October 2015 Source:Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology, Volume 17, Issue 2 Author(s): Manjusha Yadla, Priyadarshini John, Sai Kanth, Hari Prasad Blue stone (neela thotha, in local terms) is dehydrated copper sulfate and is commonly used as a pesticide, in the leather industry, and in homemade glue. It results in a rare form of poisoning limited to the Asian continent, with a high incidence in India and Sri Lanka prior to the 1980s. Poisoning due to copper sulfate results in multiorgan involvement. Here, we present a case of poisoning due to copper sulfate with acute kidney injury and intravascula...

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus: Comprehensive review on treatment options
Publication date: Available online 26 July 2015 Source:Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology Author(s): Chi-kwan Lam, Siu-kim Chan, Yiu-wing Ho, Sin-man Li, Chun-hay Tam, Anthony Wing-chung Tang, Sze-ho Wong Vancomycin-resistant enterococci have emerged as a global health care threat and their occurrence in peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis is a challenging condition for nephrologists because the treatment options are limited. In this review, we will discuss the established efficacy of linezolid, quinupristin/dalfopristin (Q/P), daptomycin, and the potential use of tigecycline in treating this condition. ...

Antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis B infection in renal transplant recipients
Publication date: Available online 4 March 2015 Source:Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology Author(s): Desmond Y.H. Yap , Tak Mao Chan Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) leads to adverse clinical outcomes in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) because of increased hepatic complications. The use of oral nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) has brought the management of HBV infection in RTRs to a new paradigm. Lamivudine (LAM) can effectively suppress HBV DNA levels, normalize liver biochemistry, and significantly improve short- and long-term patient survival in HBsAg-positive RTRs. However, it has the burden of high drug...

Sandeep Reddy , Avssn Sridhar , B. Vijayalakshmi , A.Y. Lakshmi , B. Phanindra Focal myositis is a benign inflammatory process involving a single group of muscles. It may resolve with conservative measures or may be a harbinger for polymyositis. Very few focal myosites are recurrent, and recurrence in patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis is extremely rare. Clinical examination, electromyography, and magnetic resonance im...

Comparison of clinical characteristics of acute kidney injury versus acute-on-chronic renal failure: Our experience in a developing country
Conclusion ACRF constituted an important cause (25%) of AKI. An episode of superimposed AKI is associated with significantly increased risk of progression to end-stage renal disease in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Aeroportia and Pneumatosis Intestinalis in a Hemodialysis Patient
We report a case of HPVG in an 84-year-old man who was on hemodialysis. He experienced abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting during the dialysis session. Abdominal tomodensitometry revealed the presence of HPVG and numerous air-fluid levels with pneumatosis intestinalis in the context of severe mesenteric atherosclerosis. The patient's condition gradually worsened, and he died soon afterwards. Early detection of HPVG and pneumatosis intestinalis signs is crucial for prompt diagnosis and management of acute mesenteric infarction. (Source: Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology)
