Relationship between human oxoguanine-DNA glycosylase-1 polymorphism and the outcome of Chinese peritoneal dialysis patients
Conclusion In PD patients with no systemic inflammation, hOGG1 1245CC genotype confers a survival benefit as compared to CG or GG genotype, but the protective effect disappears in patients with systemic inflammation. Our results suggest a complex interaction between hOGG1 and inflammation in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in PD patients. ...

Beneficial effect of Astragalus membranaceus on estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients with progressive chronic kidney disease
Conclusion The results suggest that A membranaceus can maintain stable levels of eGFR and delay the initiation of renal replacement therapy in patients with progressive CKD stage 4.

Patterns of matrix metalloproteinases and transforming growth factor-beta 1 expression during peritoneal repair in chlorhexidine induced peritoneal fibrosis mice
Conclusion MMP-13 was synthesized by infiltrating monocytes early in the repair process in the CG-induced PF mouse. After cessation of stimulant, increase of MMP-13 synthesis may act as an inducer of an efficient degradation cascade in collagen-rich peritoneal tissue.

Global role of kidney transplantation
Publication date: April 2012 Source:Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology, Volume 14, Issue 1 Author(s): Guillermo Garcia Garcia , Paul Harden , Jeremy Chapman World Kidney Day on March 8, 2012, provides a chance to reflect on the success of kidney transplantation as a therapy for end stage kidney disease that surpasses dialysis treatments both for the quality and quantity of life that it provides and for its cost effectiveness. Anything that is both cheaper and better, but is not actually the dominant therapy, must have other drawbacks that prevent replacement of all dialysis treatment by transplantation. The barriers to...

Astrocytoma in a renal transplant recipient: A rare case report
This report describes a rare case of astrocytoma following renal transplantation. We encountered a 28-year-old man who presented with a 20-day history of headache, vomiting, and blurred vision prior to admission. The patient was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and underwent two renal transplantations at 8 and 2 years prior, respectively. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed a predominant lymphocytic pattern and increased protein levels. Brain imaging showed two separate ill-defined hypodense lesions. The patient underwent a stereotactic brain biopsy, from which the tumor was classified as a histological g...

Relationship between acceleration plethysmography and aortic calcification index in chronic kidney disease patients
Conclusion APG-AI and ACI in the HD and PD groups were more advanced than in the nondialysis group. Aortic calcification in the HD and PD groups was affected by high levels of P and Ca×PO4. There was a significant correlation between APG, a functional evaluation of arteriosclerosis, and ACI, a morphological evaluation. Therefore, it appears that APG might provide valuable information on arteriosclerosis in CKD patients. (Source: Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology)

Glomerular and tubular dysfunctions and their relationship to adiponectin and oxidative stress in obese subjects
Conclusion Glomerular and tubular dysfunctions in obese individuals are related to low adiponectin and HDL-cholesterol levels and to oxidative stress. Tubular dysfunction precedes MA, so UGGT may be used as an early marker for obesity related nephropathy. (Source: Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology)

Effect of peritoneal dialysis on antioxidant defense system and oxidative stress
Conclusions The findings suggest that despite slightly increased MDA level, patients on PD are exposed to oxidative stress, as evidenced by the decreased levels of SOD, GPx, and vitamin C. Depletion of these antioxidants may contribute to accelerated atherogenesis in these patients. (Source: Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology)

Ectopic intrathoracic kidney: A case report and literature review
We report the case of a 20-year-old asymptomatic female patient who came to our institution for an evaluation of an incidentally noted right lung base opacity on a plain chest radiograph. The subsequent computed tomographic scanning led to the diagnosis of thoracic renal ectopia. In this article, we discuss the relevant clinicoradiological findings along with a review of the literature. (Source: Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology)

Hong Kong Renal Registry Report 2012
This report examined the characteristics and trends of dialysis and renal transplant patients among the resident population of Hong Kong who were managed by hospitals or dialysis centers of the Hospital Authority, and accounted for approximately 95% of all patients receiving renal replacement therapies (RRTs) in the territory. Patients receiving RRTs solely in the private sector were not included in this report. Data trends from 1996 to 2011 are presented. In 2011, 1115 new patients were accepted into RRT programs, and the incident rate was 157 patients per million populations (pmp). An increasing trend was noted. The inci...

Long-term outcome of biopsy-proven minimal-change nephrotic syndrome in Chinese children
Conclusion A substantial proportion of patients with childhood-onset MCN continued to have relapse after they became adults. Although almost all patients have normal renal function, prolonged use of steroid and immunosuppressive agents results in a considerable risk of treatment-related complications. Life-long follow-up seems advisable for this group of patients, not only for detecting relapses, but also to allow timely diagnosis of treatment-related complications. Distinct roles of Smads and microRNAs in TGF-β signaling during kidney diseases
Publication date: April 2013 Source:Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology, Volume 15, Issue 1 Author(s): Rong Li , Hui Y. Lan , Arthur C.K. Chung Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known to be the hallmark with fibrosis and inflammation that leads to end stage renal disease. Since the discovery over 2 decades ago of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β as a key mediator in CKD, studies of TGF-β signaling in the kidney have focused on fibrosis and inflammation. TGF-β exerts its cellular effect via Smad2 and Smad3 after binding to its receptors. Smad7, as an inhibitory Smad, provides a negative feedback loop to limit TGF-β a...
