Effect of early bisoprolol administration on ventricular arrhythmia and cardiac death in patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction
Conclusions This study suggests that low-dose oral bisoprolol administered to patients with NSTEMI within 4 h of admission may be protective and lead to reduced inpatient MACE. (Source: Heart Asia)

Prevalence of rheumatic heart disease in Senegalese school children: a clinical and echocardiographic screening
Conclusion Our study shows a relatively high prevalence of RHD. Reducing its prevalence should focus on the implementation of appropriate policies, targeting at-risk populations and focusing on raising awareness and early detection. (Source: Heart Asia)

The 2014 hypertension guidelines: implications for patients and practitioners in Asia
Hypertension is a global public health issue and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Because of population growth and ageing, the number of people with uncontrolled hypertension rose from 600 million in 1980 to nearly 1 billion in 2008. Furthermore, the number of adults with hypertension in 2025 has also been predicted to increase by about 60% to a total of 1.56 billion. The prevalence of hypertension in most Asian countries has increased over the last 30 years and more dramatically in the last 10 years. Several factors contributed to such changes in Asia, but acculturation to Western lifestyle, modernisati...

Left to right shunts with pulmonary vascular disease, still an enigma
Pulmonary vascular obstructive disease (PVOD) is a feared complication of congenital heart disease (CHD) associated with increased pulmonary blood flow. It presumably develops as a protective response to prevent pulmonary overcirculation in these patients. However, with time the changes become irreversible and, in advanced stages, correction of the defect is rendered futile and potentially hazardous. In most low-income and middle-income countries, comprehensive paediatric heart care has only recently become available. Because of serious paucity of resources, health system dysfunctions and limited awareness, only a small mi...

Surgical strategies for patients with congenital heart disease and severe pulmonary hypertension in low/middle-income countries
In this review, we discuss specific surgical strategies that are used in patients with congenital heart disease and severe pulmonary arterial hypertension. Our own experience, with the use of unidirectional valved patches in managing these patients, is also discussed in detail. (Source: Heart Asia)

Acute effects of chemoradiation on cardiac function in oesophageal cancer: a MUGA scan and echo-based study
Conclusions Concurrent chemoradiation resulted in acute decrease in EF of both ventricles in a dose-dependent manner. Correlation between cardiac doses and decrease in EF was more marked in the boost phase, suggesting a possible threshold of 40 Gy for this impairment. Nevertheless, conclusions regarding this possible threshold need to be interpreted with caution given the small sample size. (Source: Heart Asia)

Lean body mass index prognostic value for cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease
Conclusions Lower LBMI values are associated with adverse outcomes in an Asian population with CHD undergoing PCI. LBMI is a better predictor of MACE than BMI or FMI. Clinical trial registration UMIN-ID; 000010070. (Source: Heart Asia)

The 2015 revision of the Jones criteria for the diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever: implications for practice in low-income and middle-income countries
The Jones criteria has longed served as the primary guideline for diagnosing acute rheumatic fever (ARF). However, since the first iteration in 1944, the global epidemiology of ARF and our knowledge regarding the variability of its presentation have changed. In 2015, the American Heart Association took on an ambitious and successful revision, which accounts for these changes. For the first time, the criteria consider the risk within a population and offer two separate diagnostic pathways that prioritise specificity among those at low risk and sensitivity among those at moderate/high risk. Echocardiography is now recommende...

Heart Asia: a new beginning
Two rather obvious questions loom large in the minds of editors of fledgling journals such as Heart Asia. First, why should anyone choose to read my journal over a hundred others that are already well established? And second, why should anyone want their research published in a relatively new journal? Over the next few years, the new editorial team at Heart Asia will strive to answer these questions to the satisfaction of readers and researchers, and win their patronage. Our goal is an ambitious one: we wish to be the pre-eminent voice of practitioners of cardiology in the developing world (not just in the Asia-Pacific reg...

Rheumatic heart disease among adults in a mining community of Papua, Indonesia: findings from an occupational cohort
Conclusions The prevalence of RHD in Papuan mining workers correlates with adult prevalence data in other populations with a high RHD burden, highlighting RHD as a significant health issue into adulthood. The late stage at which most patients presented points to a strong need for earlier intervention. Both primary and secondary preventive measures must be considered critical tools to prevent and reduce RHD burden, particularly among older age groups. (Source: Heart Asia)
