Visible and occult microscopic lesions of endometriosis
Publication date: Available online 20 January 2015 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy Author(s): Khaleque Newaz Khan , Michio Kitajima , Koichi Hiraki , Akira Fujishita , Masahiro Nakashima , Hideaki Masuzaki Endometriosis is a multifactorial disease mostly affecting women of reproductive age and is associated with chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Even after 300 years, most of the literature claims that pathogenesis and/or pathophysiology of endometriosis is still elusive. Recurrence of pain and lesion continues to occur after effective medical or surgical therapies. Once generated within the pe...

A Pilot Study on the Use of Andrographolide to Treat Symptomatic Adenomyosis
Conclusions Andrographolide is effective in some patients with symptomatic adenomyosis, who have a higher endometrial expression of the activated form of NF-κB p65 subunit. Future independent validation studies or randomized clinical trials may be needed to more precisely evaluate the efficacy of Andrographolide. (Source: Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy)

A case of pseudo-Meigs’ syndrome mismanaged as peritoneal carcinomatosis
Publication date: Available online 15 January 2015 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy Author(s): Felix Wong This paper reported a woman with uterine fibroids and recurrent ascites being managed by her clinical oncologist as peritoneal carcinomatosis, and treated with repeated tapping, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She was finally referred to a gynaecologist who treated her with a laparoscopic hysterectomy bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for her severe anemia, aiming to remove her large fibroid as well as to exclude ovarian or uterine malignancy. Her symptoms disappeared after the surgery without recurr...

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma after fertility-sparing surgery for an ovarian tumor of borderline malignancy: a case report
We report a case of a 19-year-old woman with multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma who had previously undergone left adnexectomy due to an ovarian tumor of borderline malignancy at the age of 17 years. Follow-up imaging studies after adnexectomy revealed multiple cystic lesions of increasing size and number, suggesting recurrence of the tumor. Diagnostic laparoscopic surgery was performed, and the cystic lesion was pathologically determined to be multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma diagnosed and successfully treated by laparoscopic surgery dur...

Phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase-Akt-mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway mediates contractility of human endometriotic stromal cells: A promising new target for the treatment of endometriosis-associated fibrosis
Conclusions The present findings suggest that the PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway is involved in the development of endometriosis-associated fibrosis. The PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling pathway is a promising target for the treatment of endometriosis. (Source: Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy)

Electrosurgical technology: Quintessence of the laparoscopic armamentarium
Publication date: Available online 14 October 2014 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy Author(s): Deeksha Pandey , Chih-Feng Yen , Chyi-Long Lee , Ming-Ping Wu One of the biggest enemies of minimally invasive surgery is bleeding. The ongoing desire to improve hemostasis and thus its efficacy has led to the rapid evolution of electrosurgical technology. In this review we discuss the yet evolving science of electrosurgery. For the optimal use of available tools, it is of utmost importance for the laparoscopic surgeon to understand that different electrosurgical instruments have different properties and t...

Roles of integrin-linked kinase in cell signaling and its perspectives as a therapeutic target
Publication date: Available online 27 October 2014 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy Author(s): Chih-Feng Yen , Hsin-Shih Wang , Chyi-Long Lee , Shuen-Kuei Liao Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) localizes to focal adhesions, and interacts with the cytoplasmic tail of β subunits of integrins and couples them to the actin cytoskeleton. ILK may act as a kinase and transmit the signals in a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-dependent manner, or can act as a scaffold protein to function through cell–matrix interactions, cell signaling, and cytoskeletal organization. Within this pivotal position, ILK mediates ma...
