Complete cervical stenosis after conization: Timing for the minimally invasive reconstructive surgery
Publication date: May 2014 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy, Volume 3, Issue 2 Author(s): Shinsuke Koyama , Masaki Kobayashi , Yusuke Tanaka , Satoshi Kubota , Ryo Nakamura , Masanori Isobe , Yasuhiko Shiki Among various long-term complications after conization, complete cervical stenosis is rare (<1%) but significant. This condition is typically associated with secondary amenorrhea, cyclical lower abdominal pain, and hematometra during menstrual periods. The risk of developing this condition is strongly associated with an estrogen-deficient state. Recently, we experienced a case of comple...

Rectal injury associated with insertion of a vaginal delineator tube during total laparoscopic hysterectomy: A case report and review of the literature
We present a case of rectal injury during total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) associated with placement of a vaginal delineator tube. The patient was a 43-year-old virgin woman who presented with hypermenorrhea secondary to a large submucosal leiomyoma and underwent TLH. On insertion of a vaginal delineator tube, the boundary between the posterior vaginal fornix and the rectum was misjudged and the rectum was cut. The patient subsequently required transvaginal repair and a temporary ileostomy. With more widespread use of a vaginal delineator tube in TLH, sharing this rare experience with our colleagues will minimize such...

A modified three-port “hidden scars” surgical approach in gynecology: A surgeon's experience of an initial 72 cases
Conclusion The HS approach in gynecological surgery is feasible, safe, and reproducible when applied in women with gynecological diseases. The operation time, length of stay, and outcome would be comparable to conventional laparoscopic surgery. (Source: Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy)

Complications of electrosurgery in laparoscopy
Publication date: May 2014 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy, Volume 3, Issue 2 Author(s): Hui-Yu Huang , Chih-Feng Yen , Ming-Ping Wu Electrosurgery is widely used in laparoscopic surgeries. It is essential to understand the principles of using appropriate electric currents and techniques to achieve the desired tissue effect and avoid complications. We reviewed the literature concerning the incidence of electrosurgical injuries, the mechanisms of injury, and recognition and management of electrosurgical complications. Alertness to postoperative warning signs, patient education prior to discharge, and...

Laparoscopic myomectomy—The gold standard
Publication date: May 2014 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy, Volume 3, Issue 2 Author(s): Anja Herrmann , Rudy Leon De Wilde Uterine myomas are the main cause for gynecological disease in premenopausal women. If a myomectomy is indicated, abdominal myomectomy is still a frequently performed procedure although laparoscopic myomectomy should be the method of choice. Searches were conducted in PubMed and The Cochrane Library to identify relevant literature. Compared with myomectomy by laparotomy and minilaparotomy, laparoscopic myomectomy is associated with improved short-term outcomes. Laparoscopy is fu...

Laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy in the era of minimally invasive surgery
Publication date: Available online 8 July 2014 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy Author(s): Chia-Jen Wu , Chih-Wen Tseng , Ming-Ping Wu According to a nation-wide population-based study in Taiwan, along with the expanding concepts and surgical techniques of minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic supracervical/subtotal hysterectomy (LSH) has been blooming. Occurrence of ovarian cancer 13 years after a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for endometriosis: A case report and literature review
This article reports a rare case of cancer derived from ovarian remnant tissue. A 52-year-old woman, with a history of a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for uterine myomas and endometriosis 13 years ago, presented with a pelvic mass accompanied by high serum levels of CA125 and CA199. Exploratory laparotomy and pathology report revealed an ovarian serous tumor with low malignant potential. Cancer derived from ovarian remnant tissue is extremely rare. However, a malignancy may still originate from the ovarian remnant. Ovarian remnant syndrome after oophorectomy and its possibility of malignancy, espec...
