Adhesion-related readmissions after surgery for deep endometriosis with the use of icodextrin—long-term results
Abstract Icodextrin (Adept®) has been shown to prevent postoperative adhesions in experimental and laparoscopic adhesiolysis surgery. However, the role of icodextrin in the prevention of adhesions in extensive gynecological surgery is unclear. The present study evaluated the effect of icodextrin on adhesion-related readmissions after extensive gynecological surgery. The hospital readmissions of 140 endometriosis patients operated on at Päijät-Häme Central Hospital in 2004–2008 with the use of icodextrin were retrospectively reviewed. The evaluation of readmissions focused on adhesion-related disorde...

Suggested spontaneous resolution of possible paediatric hydrosalpinx: a case report with discussion
Abstract Hydrosalpinx is a rare cause of abdominal pain in paediatric patients, though cases are documented in the literature. Its aetiology differs considerably from traditional hydrosalpinx due to ascending sexually transmitted infection. Hydrosalpinx can resent mimicking an acute abdomen or can be asymptomatic. Management of paediatric hydrosalpinx varies but often involves surgical removal of the affected tube. A 12-year-old girl presented with left-sided acute abdominal pain setting within 24 h. Initial ultrasound scan suggested presence of hydrosalpinx. Post-discharge follow-up appointment with a c...

Reliability of fluid monitoring during operative hysteroscopy
Abstract The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reliability of volume-based fluid balance monitoring in operative hysteroscopy. The actual volume of twenty 3-litre Glycine 1.5 % bags was measured by weighing the contents of each bag and by converting the weight into volume knowing the specific gravity of Glycine 1.5 %. The volume of the SerresOY suction canisters that represents the output volume was measured using a calibrated 1000-ml beaker. The volume in the 3-litre Glycine 1.5 % bags ranged from a minimum 3105 ml to a maximum of 3124 ml with a mean volume of 3115.3 ml. The actual volume of...

Incarceration of sessile uterine fibroids in an incisional hernia in a postmenopausal woman: a case report
We present an uncommon case of a 57-year-old primipara with a previous history of caesarean section and a laparotomy on account of adhesive intestinal obstruction. She presented with lower abdominal swelling and abdominal pain since 7 years. She had surgical removal of the mass and total abdominal hysterectomy with mesh repair of the incisional hernia. Histology of the resected hernia content revealed leiomyoma. Abdominal wall fibroid is a good differential diagnosis to be considered in any woman with an anterior abdominal mass and previous uterine surgery, including caesarean section. Robotic vaginally assisted NOTES hysterectomy: the first case series demonstrating a new surgical technique
The objective of this case report is to demonstrate a new hysterectomy technique via transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) using robotic surgery. Previous experience with the Da Vinci Xi (Intuitive Surgery) for gynaecological oncology, and with NOTES for adnexal surgery and hysterectomy, led to the decision to combine the advantages of these techniques, namely to reduce the invasiveness of robotic surgery and improve the ergonomics of NOTES. A robotic vaginally assisted NOTES hysterectomy (VANH) was performed in five patients with a myomatous uterus. The circumcision of the cervix, the openin...

The Thessaloniki ESHRE/ESGE consensus on diagnosis of female genital anomalies
Abstract What is the recommended diagnostic work-up of female genital anomalies according to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE)/European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) system? The ESHRE/ESGE consensus for the diagnosis of female genital anomalies is presented. Accurate diagnosis of congenital anomalies still remains a clinical challenge due to the drawbacks of the previous classification systems and the non-systematic use of diagnostic methods with varying accuracy, with some of them quite inaccurate. Currently, a wide range of non-invasive diagnostic procedures...

Does hysteroscopic metroplasty for septate uterus represent a risk factor for adverse outcome during pregnancy and labor?
Abstract The aim of the study was to evaluate whether hysteroscopic metroplasty for septate uterus represents a risk factor of adverse outcome in pregnancy, during labor, and after delivery. This is a retrospective comparative study of obstetric complications of 99 patients who underwent hysteroscopic metroplasty in a 5-year period (study group) and 4155 women, who gave birth in the same hospital in the same period (control group). No difference in obstetric outcome (preterm labor, hemorrhage before and after delivery, mean weeks of gestation at delivery, mean birth weight, breech presentation, and cesare...

Comparative study among cine-magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and periumbilical ultrasound-guided saline infusion in high-risk patients for subumbilical adhesions before laparoscopic entry
This study was carried out on 90 high-risk patients for subumbilical adhesions. All patients were subjected to medical history, physical examination, laboratory investigations, and three techniques for subumbilical adhesions detection before laparoscopic entry including cine-MRI, TAU, and PUGSI. PUGSI for detection of subumbilical adhesions showed that the sensitivity of 94.7 % and a specificity of 90.1 %. With preoperative TAU, a sensitivity of 89.5 % and a specificity of 88.7 % were obtained. With cine-MRI, a sensitivity of 78.9 % and a specificity of 84.5 % were obtained. PUGSI is a more sensitive and rapid method...

Intravesical mini-laparoscopic repair of vesicovaginal fistulas
Abstract Vesicovaginal fistulas (VVF) constitute the most common type of genitourinary fistulas. In developed countries, VVF are almost always iatrogenic and frequently a secondary result of gynecological surgery. Some minimally invasive techniques have been introduced to decrease the morbidity related to standard open procedures for the treatment of VVF. One such procedure is the intravesical mini-laparoscopic approach. The aim of this study was to present our initial clinical experience using this technique for transvesical VVF repair. In 2013 and 2014, we carried out mini-laparoscopic repair of VVF in ...
