Ergonomics of laparoscopic graspers and the importance of haptic feedback: the surgeons’ perspective
This study stresses that the high prevalence of physical complaints directly related to laparoscopic instruments among laparoscopic surgeons is still relevant. Furthermore, the potential benefits of enhanced haptic feedback in laparoscopic surgery are recognized by laparoscopic specialists. Therefore, haptic feedback is considered an unmet need in laparoscopy. (Source: Gynecological Surgery)

Deep infiltrating endometriosis affecting the urinary tract—surgical treatment and fertility outcomes in 2004–2013
Abstract Urinary tract endometriosis (UTE) is a rare form of deep infiltrating endometriosis. We studied the operative treatment of UTE and evaluated postoperative recurrences and fertility outcomes. This is a retrospective cohort study of 53 women who underwent operative treatment for UTE in 2004–2013 at Helsinki University Hospital, and were followed-up until the end of 2014. The data were gathered from the hospital’s electronic database. The main outcome measures were complications, reoperations, postoperative pregnancies, and deliveries. Preoperative diagnosis was accurate in 72 % with bladder en...

Rectal misoprostol plus perivascular vasopressin versus tourniquet to decrease blood loss during abdominal myomectomy
Abstract The aim of this study is to compare between combined preoperative rectal misoprostol plus perivascular vasopressin and tourniquet to decrease blood loss during abdominal myomectomy. In this randomized study, 104 patients were randomly allocated to receive either combined 400 μg rectal misoprostol plus perivascular vasopressin (n = 52) or tourniquet (n = 52). The main outcome measure was the operative blood loss. Secondary outcome measures included the requirement for blood transfusion, the change in hemoglobin level after operation, and incidence of complications. Blood loss was signifi...

Prevalence and predictors of burnout among obstetrics and gynecology residents in Canada
Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of burnout syndrome among obstetrics and gynecology residents, as well as the relationship between several demographic and work-related characteristics and the prevalence of burnout. We surveyed 143 residents in obstetrics and gynecology programs across eight provinces in Canada using an electronic survey questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human services survey. The prevalence of high emotional exhaustion was 12.6 % higher among younger than older residents and 12.4 % higher among female compared to male residents. The prevalence ...

A patient-preference cohort study of office versus inpatient uterine polyp treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding
Abstract Uterine polyps can cause abnormal bleeding in women. Conventional practise is to remove them under general anaesthesia but advances in technology have made it possible to perform polypectomy in the office setting. We conducted a patient-preference study to explore women’s preferences for treatment setting and to evaluate the effectiveness and treatment experience of women undergoing uterine polypectomy. Three hundred ninety-nine women with abnormal uterine bleeding who were found to have uterine polyps at diagnostic hysteroscopy were recruited. Office polypectomies were performed in office hyst...

The management of gynecological hemoperitoneum found to be associated with a ruptured corpus luteum cyst
Abstract Rupture of a corpus luteum cyst (RCLC) is the major cause of gynecological hemoperitoneum. RCLC is often difficult to diagnose on imaging and a standardized management is not defined. While mild cases of hemoperitoneum associated with RCLC require only observation and support, surgical intervention is necessary for severe cases or if the adnexal cyst in question is concerning for malignancy or torsion. Our study compares the outcomes of patients undergoing conservative and surgical management of gynecological hemoperitoneum found to be associated with RCLC. We performed a retrospective chart revi...

Surgeon preference when purchasing integrated laparoscopic theatres: a survey of British gynaecologists
Abstract This was a web-based survey of members of the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy to establish what features of integrated theatres are considered desirable to surgeons. A secondary aim was to assess if there are differences in preference between those surgeons who use these theatres regularly and those who have never used them. Respondents were asked to rank a list of 14 features of integrated theatres in terms of desirability with 1 being most desirable and 14 being least desirable. They were separately asked to rate each feature according to importance. The main outcome measures were ...

A new technique in the laparoscopic resection of cornual ectopic pregnancies: a case series
We present a series of four cases where intramyometrial carboprost injection was used successfully, prior to the laparoscopic resection of cornual ectopic pregnancies, to produce consistent and reproducible surgical benefits including prolonged myometrial contractions and subsequent reduced uterine blood flow. This results in a significant reduction in intraoperative blood loss as well as a clearer demarcation of the ectopic pregnancy and a technically easier resection. (Source: Gynecological Surgery)

A novel use of vaginoscopic office hysteroscopy for prediction of tubal patency and peristalsis among infertile women: a preliminary study
The objective of this study is to test whether vaginoscopic office hysteroscopy (OH) can predict proximal tubal patency as compared with hysterosalpingography (HSG) and diagnostic laparoscopy (DL) and concomitantly tubal peristalsis in infertile women. This is a prospective cross sectional study. The setting is in the endoscopy unit of a tertiary hospital. A total of 85 infertile patients scheduled for laparoscopy are used as the sample of this study. The method used is the vaginoscopic OH in the outpatient infertility clinic to assess proximal tubal patency. The patency results will be compared to HSG and DL reports. Diag...

A case report of spontaneous pneumoperitoneum after sexual intercourse following a total laparoscopic hysterectomy, bilateral saplingo-oophorectomy and infra-colic omentectomy
We present a case of a 28-year-old female presented to the Accident and Emergency department with a 6-h history of severe abdominal pain and bilateral shoulder tip pain. She reported that the pain developed 2 h following sexual intercourse. She had undergone a laparoscopic total hysterectomy, bilateral saplingo-oophorectomy and infra-colic omentectomy for borderline ovarian tumours 25 days previously. The most likely cause of this patient’s acute abdominal pain was a spontaneous pneumoperitoneum secondary to sexual activity. Clinicians should be aware with the potential non-surgical causes for the presence of a pneumop...

Management of pelvic organ prolapse in French-speaking Belgium: the EPILAPSUS study
Abstract Management of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) may be conducted by abdominal (laparotomy or laparoscopy) or vaginal approach, with or without mesh repair, mainly depending on the surgeon’s expertise. The aim of this study was to determine the trends in surgical management of POP in French-speaking Belgium. The GGOLFB Gynecologic surgery working group initiated a registry of the patients surgically treated for POP from eight centers in French-speaking Belgium. In this prospective multicentric study, conducted between June 2010 and January 2013, we analyzed the clinical and surgical data, the postoper...
