Parent‐mediated early intervention for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
Abstract The commentaries in this section refer to the review, Oono IP, Honey EJ, McConachie H. Parent‐mediated early intervention for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2013, Issue 4. Art. No.: CD009774. DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD009774.pub2. Editor's note: Parents of children with autism often have a complicated life. In some cases, because of their child's behavior, they cannot take them to a restaurant or to a movie, let alone on a vacation. Finding child‐care may be impossible. Some children with autism appear to be unhappy much of the time. Most parents woul...

Parent‐mediated early intervention for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
Abstract BackgroundYoung children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have impairments in the areas of communication and social interaction and often display repetitive or non‐compliant behaviour. This early pattern of difficulties is a challenge for parents. Therefore, approaches that help parents develop strategies for interaction and management of behaviour are an obvious route for early intervention in ASD. This review updates a Cochrane review first published in 2002 but is based on a new protocol. ObjectivesTo assess the effectiveness of parent‐mediated early interventions in terms of the benefits for both child...

Monoclonal antibody for reducing the risk of respiratory syncytial virus infection in children
Abstract BackgroundRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most important viral pathogens causing acute respiratory infections, resulting in about 3.4 million hospitalisations annually in children under five. Palivizumab is the only product approved for prevention of serious RSV disease, as motavizumab is no longer being developed for this condition. The efficacy and safety of palivizumab has been evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and a large number of economic evaluations (EEs) have tested its cost‐effectiveness. ObjectivesTo assess the effectiveness and safety of palivizumab prophylaxis in reduci...

Vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella in children
Abstract BackgroundMumps, measles and rubella (MMR) are serious diseases that can lead to potentially fatal illness, disability and death. However, public debate over the safety of the trivalent MMR vaccine and the resultant drop in vaccination coverage in several countries persists, despite its almost universal use and accepted effectiveness. ObjectivesTo assess the effectiveness and adverse effects associated with the MMR vaccine in children up to 15 years of age. Search methodsFor this update we searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 2), which includes the...

Corticosteroids for the prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants: an overview of Cochrane reviews
ConclusionSystemic corticosteroids decrease BPD and early mortality in premature infants but have a risk of complications, particularly when initiated in the first week of life. Owing to the wide range of dosing protocols, timing of initiation, doses and duration of therapy in the included reviews, it is difficult to determine, based on the evidence examined in this overview, a protocol that is both safe and effective. Further research should focus on determining the most effective dose and timing of corticosteroid administration beyond the first week of life to maximize benefit in decreasing BPD and mortality while avoidi...

Oral antihistamine–decongestant–analgesic combinations for the common cold—do they work?
Abstract Eco‐paediatrics is an occasional feature in Evidence‐Based Child Health: A Cochrane Review Journal. Our goal is to contribute to the worldwide discussion on reducing waste in health care. In each instalment, we will select a recent Cochrane review highlighting a practice, still in use, which the available evidence tells us should be discontinued. School‐based programmes for preventing smoking
Abstract BackgroundHelping young people to avoid starting smoking is a widely endorsed public health goal, and schools provide a route to communicate with nearly all young people. School‐based interventions have been delivered for close to 40 years. ObjectivesThe primary aim of this review was to determine whether school smoking interventions prevent youth from starting smoking. Our secondary objective was to determine which interventions were most effective. This included evaluating the effects of theoretical approaches; additional booster sessions; programme deliverers; gender effects; and multifocal interventions vers...
