Delirium in malnourished elderly subjects: Could it be refeeding syndrome?
Publication date: Available online 29 April 2016 Source:European Geriatric Medicine Author(s): M. Coutaz Refeeding syndrome (RS) is a potentially serious but underrecognized phenomenon in geriatric medicine. It can occur in malnourished elderly subjects when feeding is re-introduced after a period of fasting. The clinical presentation of RS is unspecific, and it is often accompanied by psychomotor impairment suggestive of delirium. In this article, illustrated by 2 clinical cases, we report a series of 13 patients with RS, of whom 11 had delirium. Treatment of RS is based on progressive refeeding and phosphate, mag...

Early geriatric follow-up after discharge reduces readmissions – A quasi-randomised controlled trial
Conclusions A geriatrician and specialised nurse home-visit during the first days following hospital discharge reduces the readmission rate for acute medical patients by almost 50%, compared to patients accompanied home or subsequently telephoned. Hospitalisation was reduced, but 30-day mortality did not differ significantly between groups. (Source: European Geriatric Medicine)

Systematic review: Prevalence of sarcopenia in ageing people using bioelectrical impedance analysis to assess muscle mass
Conclusions Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in older individuals, especially in rehabilitation units. All the studies of prevalence carried out before the current sarcopenia consensus are studies to establish cutoff points of low muscle mass but they do not reflect sarcopenia's prevalence because they do not take into account muscle function. Validation of the Vulnerable Elders Survey-13 (VES-13) in hospitalized older patients
Conclusion The VES-13 demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity in detecting functional deficits in older subjects. High correlations with other measures of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment make it a valuable screening tool for older patients. A cut-off point of 6 seems optimal for screening purposes by health services. (Source: European Geriatric Medicine)

Interprofessional education in geriatric medicine
This article presents a geriatric medicine literature review on IPE, covering several studies that have examined such education, describing different types of intervention and the involvement of various health professionals. There was no clear evidence that could be drawn from the available literature about best practice and intervention, due to the differences in interventions and the lack of replication studies. In this article, we have also reviewed the theories on which IPE is based and its suitability for application to the discipline of geriatric medicine (e.g. regarding curriculum design, clinical practice, and the ...
