A new missense mutation in PLA2G6 gene among a family with infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy INAD
Conclusion Early onset loss of developmental milestones with cerebellar atrophy and other described clinical findings ultimately warrant PLA2G6 gene sequencing. Here we report c.319 del. C of PLA2G6 detected by next generation sequencing to be responsible for severe early infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy with early infantile death. We conclude that various PLA2G6 gene sites sequencing need further investigation in INAD in line with clinical correlation. Also INAD seems to be an unrecognized disorder that needs more categorization for proper diagnosis and genetic counselling. (Source: Egyptian Pediatric Association Gazette)

Foreign body aspiration in children and role of flexible bronchoscopy: A 3year experience
Conclusion The combination of history, physical examination, and chest X-ray findings are crucial when investigating a child with suspected foreign body aspiration. Flexible bronchoscopy is effective for diagnostic and sometimes therapeutic purpose of problems in the upper and lower respiratory airways in children, with a high success rate as it significantly reduces the rate of negative rigid bronchoscopies and ultimately saves the child from undergoing an unnecessary procedure. Food addiction relations to depression and anxiety in Egyptian adolescents
Conclusion FA exists in Egyptian adolescents and has strong associations with psychiatric comorbidities. Anxiety and depression should be evaluated in every individual with FA and vice versa as these psychiatric morbidities may be the inciting factor for the development of food addiction. Evaluation and treatment should address all the existent comorbidities. Careful attention should be paid to the presence of excess food consumption despite knowledge of adverse consequences, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms and important social or occupational activities given up or reduced because their presence coincided in this study wit...

The prevalence of active nutritional rickets in Egyptian infants in Cairo
Conclusion Rickets is still prevalent in Egypt; however, at a lower prevalence than that reported before. We recommend examining all infants at the age of 18months by primary health care physicians and screening by ALP as this age showed a prevalence of rickets of 12/1000 to direct proper treatment and avoid the physical deformities resulting from insufficient calcium and/or vitamin D in infants in the early stages of walking. For the screening and diagnosis of rickets in a limited resources country like Egypt, we recommend the measurement of ALP. Proper education about calcium rich foods, adequate number of servings/day a...

Maternal –cord blood vitamin C status and its relation to fetal growth and placental apoptosis
Conclusion Maternal vitamin C level has a significant positive impact on neonatal anthropometry and placental weight while negatively correlating with placental apoptosis. This denotes an important role of vitamin C in fetal and placental growth during pregnancy. (Source: Egyptian Pediatric Association Gazette)

Hashimoto ’s encephalopathy presenting with acute confusional state in a patient with hypothyroidism
We report a case of a 6year old previously healthy Egyptian female , who developed a subacute onset of declining upper brain function. Serologic studies demonstrated high levels of antithyroid antibodies. Electroencephalographic and magnetic resonance image findings were consistent with Hashimoto’s encephalopathy. Hashimoto’s encephalopathy is a diagnosis of exclusion. This unusual disorder is often underrecognized because of multiple neurocognitive manifestations; therefore, it is important to be aware of the clinical manifestations to make a correct diagnosis. Serum levels of ghrelin, adipokines, and tumor necrosis factor- α (TNF-α) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis in Assuit University Hospitals: Relation to nutritional status and disease activity
Conclusion Ghrelin and leptin could be considered to be responsible for decreased BMI in patients with JIA, so they might be potential targets of new therapeutic strategies for correction of anorexia and associated weight loss in those patients. Low ghrelin and high TNF-α could be used as useful tools in monitoring disease activity in JIA. (Source: Egyptian Pediatric Association Gazette)

Vitamin D and its binding protein in children with cystic fibrosis: A single center study
Conclusions The present study has demonstrated that the levels of 25OHD and VDBP are decreased in CF patients while IgG levels are within normal values. In addition, the serum level of 25OHD was significantly lower in patients with FTT, also significant relations of VDBP with failure to thrive and pancreatic insufficiency were noted, emphasizing its role as a marker for the nutritional status in CF patients. As a component of anti-inflammatory and nutritional therapy, vitamin D is a predictor for clinical outcomes. (Source: Egyptian Pediatric Association Gazette)
