Promising roles of erythropoietin and lymphotoxin alpha in critical illness: A pilot study in critically ill children
Conclusions Both EPO and LT-α showed significant increment in critically ill children especially in survivors. Our data strongly suggest that, LT-α may have an anti-inflammatory role in children with acute critical illness. (Source: Egyptian Pediatric Association Gazette)

Impact of underlying cause of bronchiectasis on clinical outcome: A comparative study on CF and Non-CF bronchiectasis in Egyptian children
Conclusion Although, the majority of bronchiectasis cases in this study were due to non-CF bronchiectasis causes. CF bronchiectasis was associated with significant very severe impairment of FEV1, also with the greatest proportion of deaths compared to non-CF bronchiectasis. Can we rely on the neutrophil left shift for the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis? Need for re-evaluation
Conclusion Neutrophil left shift is a rapid, simple and readily available test that has a reasonable positive predictive value and specificity which denotes its usefulness in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis as well as in decreasing the exposure of non-septic neonates to antimicrobial therapy. Diffusion-weighted MRI and urinary Activin-A are potential predictors of severity in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
Conclusions DW-MRI imaging is correlated well with urinary Activin-A in full-term neonates with HIE and both of them are correlated with the degree of HIE. Early determination of urinary Activin-A combined with DW-MRI imaging can early detect HIE and its degree of severity in full-term neonates with HIE. (Source: Egyptian Pediatric Association Gazette)

Characteristics of autoimmune hepatitis in a sample of Egyptian children
Conclusion AIH type 1 was the main type of autoimmune hepatitis in children referred to Benha University Hospitals. Females more affected than boys. The combination of prednisone and azathioprine are effective in abating the inflammatory process in most of the cases. Early diagnosis and treatment of AIH had apparently good outcome in children. Iron therapy and anthropometry: A case-control study among iron deficient preschool children
Conclusion IDA during the first 6years of life, when growth is fast, adversely affects both linear growth and weight gain which is reversible with iron therapy, thus adequate iron status is crucial for normal growth (height, weight and GV). The findings of the present study supported the beneficial effects of oral iron supplementation on physical growth parameters of IDA preschool children. Long-term prognosis of type 1 diabetes in relation to the clinical characteristics at the onset of diabetes
Conclusion: Female gender, younger age, presence of DKA, lower C-peptide and higher HbA1c at onset could predict a poor long-term outcome. Identification of factors related to a worse outcome of T1DM at the onset of diabetes might help in selecting those patients who should be given more intensive treatment.
