Cephalometric evaluation of soft tissue changes following bilateral sagittal split setback osteotomy
Conclusion: It has been found that the soft tissue pogonion change is more evident and predictable than soft tissue menton with reference to hard tissue. Significant vertical changes were observed in relation to most of the parameters, except labrale superius. Some of the ratios correlating the hard and soft tissue found were concordant with those found in the literature. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

An unusual case of glandular/botryoid odontogenic cyst with keratinization
A 67-year-old female was referred to the oral and maxillofacial radiology service with a chief complaint of pain of the left mandible of 2 months’ duration. Intraoral examination revealed enlargement of the body of the mandible extending from the left retromolar area to approximately the right canine area. The overlying mucosa was normal. The imaging characteristics were of an extensive multilocularneoplasm with numerous curved coarse septa dividing the lesion into multiple cystic spaces. The appearance was most consistent with an ameloblastoma. Histopathologic examination revealed fibrous tissue with multiple cystic spa...

A case of mandibular tuberculosis osteomyelitis with no pulmonary lesion
Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is recognized as an infectious disease, usually transmitted by infectious air droplets. It has a rare oral manifestation, which may occur as a secondary lesion in gingival tissue, palate, tongue, and jaw bones. However, bony TB may occur as a single lesion without systemic manifestations in the form of chronic osteomyelitis, with areas of increased resistance to antibiotics. The case presented is a female patient who was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department with a previous diagnosis of TB lymphadenitis. She presented with an on and off suppurative swelling related to the low...

A clinical study on the effect of new curved paediatric segment transfer distraction osteogenesis for symphyseal mandibular reconstruction
Conclusion: Reconstruction of mandibular symphyseal defects in children is extremely challenging because of the anatomy of their mandibles. There have been few, if any, clinical reports on the use of an internal distractor to cure mandibular symphyseal defects in children. Compared with the currently used external distractor, an internally fixed distractor may be more comfortable for patients, and thus we designed an internal distractor that could be used in these paediatric defects. Arthrocentesis with or without additional drugs in temporomandibular joint internal derangement: comparison of three treatment protocols
This study aimed to compare the use of arthrocentesis alone versus arthrocentesis in combination with intrajoint medication (corticosteroid or sodium hyaluronate) in management of TMJ internal derangement. Materials and methods: Eighteen patients who failed conservative treatment of TMJ internal derangement were randomly selected and divided into three equal groups. Arthrocentesis of upper joint space was then performed using 150–200 ml of lactated Ringer’s solution under general anesthesia for group 1, whereas in group 2 arthrocentesis was followed by injection of 1 ml betamethasone and in group 3 arthrocentesis was f...

Versatility and limitation of tongue flap in oral cavity reconstruction
Oral cavity reconstruction is challenging due to complex of anatomy and function. A tongue flap is frequently used for oral cavity reconstruction in median size defect (4–7 cm2). Thirty patients indicated for soft tissue reconstruction after tumor resection and residual palatal fistulae after primary palatal repair were included. Tongue flaps were used in 20 patients with successful outcome and low donor site morbidity. Ten patients with large-size oral defects were treated by temporalis muscle flaps, buccinator myomucosal flaps, and platysma myocutaneous flaps. Appropriate oral cavity reconstruction with successful outc...

Identafi system performance in the screening of oral malignant and potentially malignant lesions
The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of the Identafi system in the screening of oral malignant and potentially malignant lesions over a conventional oral examination (COE). The study was a diagnostic clinical trial, in which 599 tobacco users were assessed through COE. The examination was repeated using the Identafi system. Biopsies of suspicious lesions served as the gold standard for evaluation of the validity of the technique. The Identafi showed 93.4% sensitivity and 98.9% specificity versus COE. When histopathology served as the gold standard, both techniques had a sensitivity and a specificity of 80.0 and...

A new caliper for assessment of facial swelling following odontectomy of mandibular third molar
Conclusion: The new cheek thickness caliper is a relatively accurate, ethical, and clinically applicable tool. It can be used to measure the facial swellings in the course of their progression, under the influence of various surgical approaches, or drug regimens comparable to other objective measurement techniques. Ameloblastic fibroma of the posterior maxilla. Presenting as a complication of bilateral maxillary impacted third molars: a case report
Ameloblastic fibroma is a rare odontogenic tumour, uncommon in the posterior maxilla. A case report is presented where swelling and excruciating pain in the buccal space distal to maxillary impacted third molars on both sides was the presenting features. Evaluation of platelet-rich fibrin versus platelet-rich plasma on the outcome of mandibular fracture: a comparative study
The aim of the study was to evaluate the application of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) versus platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the outcome of mandibular fracture: a comparative study. This prospective comparative study was carried on 16 patients ranging in age from 20 to 42 years. The patients were divided into two equal groups. The results of this study showed that PRP and PRF seem to aid acceleration of bone healing in mandibular fractures, but PRF more so than PRP in bone formation. Is the mixture of β-tricalcium phosphate with platelet-rich fibrin quite enough for sinus lift and dental implant installation?
Conclusion: The present study showed consistent bone formation at the maxillary sinus floor following the bone augmentation process as well as after implant installation. This study suggests that use of alloplastic bone granules mixed with platelet-rich fibrin can reduce the risk for morbidity related to harvesting an autogenous bone graft and reduce the time needed for new bone formation and subsequently implant installation. Evaluation of the effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields on osseointegration of immediate dental implants: a clinical study
Conclusion: From the present limited series of patients, we can conclude that PEMFs stimulation might have a beneficial effect on osseointegration of immediate dental implants. However, more research using a larger sample size with longer follow-up periods is recommended. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Clinical and radiographic evaluation of platelet-rich fibrin gel on the outcome of mandibular fracture
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of platelet-rich fibrin on the outcome of mandibular fractures. Patients and methods: Prospective comparative study carried on 24 patients ranging in age from 20 to 42 years. The patients were divided into two equal groups. Group I (control group): included eight patients treated by open reduction and direct osteosynthesis using 2.0-mm miniplate with conventional screw where nothing was locally applied on the fracture line. Group II [platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) group]: included eight patients treated by open reduction and direct osteosynthesis using 2.0-mm miniplate...
