Intraturbinal versus extraturbinal microdebrider-assisted inferior turbinoplasty: Preliminary results
Conclusions Extraturbinal microdebrider-assisted inferior turbinoplasty is as effective and safe as the intraturbinal one with shorter operative time and less blood loss with similar morbidity, so the extraturbinal microdebrider-assisted inferior turbinoplasty could be a good option for all cases of inferior turbinate hypertrophy reserving the intraturbinal technique for patients with possible delay of mucosal regeneration e.g. diabetics and old age and patients not accepting the relative delay of improvement of their symptoms. Cleft palate lateral synechia syndrome: Inhereditary or not?
Publication date: July 2014 Source:Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences, Volume 15, Issue 2 Author(s): Shahin AbdollahiFakhim , Gholamreza Bayazian , Rezvan Notash Cleft palate lateral synechia syndrome (CPLS) is a very rare syndrome characterized by a cleft palate, adhesions in the mouth roof, some parts of the tongue or the mouth floor. This is a report of a 12-week-old female infant presented for evaluation of cleft palate, with lateral synechia that caused the inability to fully open the mouth. Cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma: A case report
We report the case of a 23-year old woman who presented with an asymptomatic solitary left cervical swelling. She was evaluated with sonography and computed tomography. Complete surgical excision of the lesion was carried out and histologic examination revealed a schwannoma. Post-operatively, the patient showed clinical findings of Horner’s syndrome. Pathologic and radiological evaluation, differential diagnosis of this neoplasm and its management are discussed. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences)

Endoscopic removal of nasal septum chondrosarcoma in paediatric patient
We report a boy with progressive history of nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Nasal endoscopy revealed a mass arising from nasal septum. Endoscopic excision of the tumour was successfully done followed by radiotherapy. Endoscopic excision of chondrosarcoma of the nasal septum in its early stage should be considered for better outcome. Papillary carcinoma in a thyroglossal duct remnant: A case report and discussion on management
Conclusion Computed tomography scanning and fine-needle aspiration cytology enhance the preoperative diagnosis. Sistrunk procedure is the standard treatment with a clinically and radiologically normal thyroid gland, while the more aggressive treatment is necessary in advanced cases. The concept of prognostic risk groups should be used to identify patients who would need a more aggressive approach. The prognosis is generally excellent with adequate treatment. Sinonasal mucous cyst: A rare complication of septorhinoplasty
Conclusion It seems that the proliferation of entrapped fragments of epithelial tissue is the cause of this phenomenon. To avoid such a complication, procedures of septorhinoplasty should be performed appropriately and mucosal lining should be kept intact. ‘H’ type tracheo-oesophageal fistula – Case reports with review of the literature
We report two cases, one presented as a 3months female child with ‘nasal regurgitation of feeds, recurrent pneumonia and choking on feeding since 15days of life, while the other immediately after birth with classic triad of symptoms. A review of the literature is presented, with a focused discussion of presentation and treatment options. Confirmation of diagnosis was done by compiling clinical presentation, high index of suspicion and rigid tracheobronchoscopy findings. Management involved surgery by right transcervical approach. High index of clinical suspicion and early diagnosis can provide a better prognosis. (Source...

Pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland with extensive bone formation – A rare case report
We report an unusual case of a huge tumor that measured 9×8cm & 400g by weight with extensive bone formation, occurring in the parotid gland of a 22year old man. Thorough clinical examination was done. FNAC was done which showed Myxochondroid matrix with glandular epithelial cells suggesting pleomorphic adenoma. CT scan head & neck revealed a large mass with nodular areas of calcification within soft tissue with marked narrowing of orophayngeal lumen. Total parotidectomy with preservation of facial nerve was done by the Transcervical Transparotid approach. The histopathological findings suggested the possi...

Neck swelling: Unusual manifestation of Pott’s spine
We report a case of tuberculosis of the spine, which had an unusual presentation only as a painless neck swelling, without any neurological complications. The patient did not respond well to antitubercular therapy (ATT), necessitating thoracotomy and drainage of pus. Then his ATT was continued for 1year and is asymptomatic during 1year of follow up thereafter. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences)

Metastatic papillary carcinoma thyroid co-existing with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and review of literature
We report a case of a 65year old male with primary squamous cell carcinoma of alveolus with bilateral neck nodes. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed metastatic squamous cell carcinoma in lymph nodes on the left side and metastatic papillary carcinoma in the lymph node on the right side. We present the diagnostic dilemma and the confusion in planning the treatment of such difficult situation. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences)

Diffusion-weighted MRI versus PET/CT in evaluation of clinically N0 neck in patients with HNSCC. Systematic review and meta-analysis study
Conclusions The available evidence suggests that DWI is more sensitive than PET/CT in the preoperative evaluation of cN0 neck in patients with HNSCC. PET/CT exam has low sensitivity and a positive test would not help the clinician in the management of the patient with clinically N0 disease and therefore, it should not be routinely used in neck nodal status work-ups. A study of middle ear reconstruction, the degree of functional restoration and causes of graft failure following chronic ear disease
Conclusion Patients with normal Eustachian tube function, large and medium size mastoids, small and medium size perforations of the tympanic membrane would have a good rate of graft uptake with tympano-ossiculoplasties thereby returning to normal hearing postoperatively.
