Spending an Evening in the Dark: The Radiology Medical Student Call Experience
The level of independent decision-making required of a radiology resident, as well as the acuity of studies populating the worklist, differ between the normal workday and a call shift. However, unlike clerkships where call is standard, medical students in radiology typically only have half of the true resident experience. To expose our rotating medical students to what a future career in radiology might actually look like, we implemented a required call shift as part of our medical student curriculum. Abdominal Lymphangiomatosis With Intestinal Lymphangiectasia Diagnosed by Magnetic Resonance Lymphangiography: A Case Report
Lymphatic diseases of the body have a diverse spectrum.1-4 They can vary from small lymphangioma, which are usually asymptomatic, to large and diffuse variants of generalized lymphangiomatosis, which have protean manifestations. There is no generalized classification of lymphatic disorders as many entities are still not better understood. Localized lymphangiomatosis can occur in the abdomen, which can occur intraperitoneal or in retroperitoneum or in both compartments. They can be associated changes in bowel with lymphangiectasia of bowel. (Source: Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology)

Diagnostic Performance of SRU and ATA Thyroid Nodule Classification Algorithms as Tested With a 1 Million Virtual Thyroid Nodule Model
The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU 2005) and American Thyroid Association (ATA 2009 and ATA 2015) have published algorithms regarding thyroid nodule management. Kwak et al. and other groups have described models that estimate thyroid nodules ’ malignancy risk. The aim of our study is to use Kwak’s model to evaluate the tradeoffs of both sensitivity and specificity of SRU 2005, ATA 2009 and ATA 2015 management algorithms. Invasive Sinonasal Lesions: From the Nasal Fossa and Paranasal Sinuses to the Endocranium
The aim of this work is to review the spectrum of sinonasal lesions that extend to the endocranium and to present key points that may narrow the differential diagnosis. The most frequent sinonasal lesions that extend into the endocranium are malignant; however, benign entities are not unusual. Imaging diagnosis is difficult because malignant lesions and benign entities share similar clinical, epidemiologic, and imaging features. Tumor features in relation to bone, intratumor homogeneity and structure, magnetic resonance imaging signal, along with clinical and epidemiologic aspects may allow an appropriate diagnostic focus ...

Spirometry-Assisted High Resolution Chest Computed Tomography in Children: Is it Worth the Effort?
Image quality of high resolution chest computed tomographies (HRCTs) depends on adequate breath holds at end inspiration and end expiration. We hypothesized that implementation of spirometry-assisted breath holds in children undergoing HRCTs would improve image quality over that obtained with voluntary breath holds by decreasing motion artifact and atelectasis. Second Opinion by In-House Radiologists: Present Picture and Emphasis on Standardizing Imaging Protocol in Oncology
Standardization of imaging acquisition protocol, modification in protocols for specific tumor and standardization in providing image data sets for outside referral, will help not only patients but also oncologists (who requests the second read) and the radiologists (who provides the second read on outside imaging). The practical benefits to patients include, cost savings (limiting the repeat radiological examination), timely initiation of treatment; the unrealized benefits include prevention of unnecessary anxiety and discomfort. Real-Time Electronic Dashboard Technology and Its Use to Improve Pediatric Radiology Workflow
The purpose of our study was to create a real-time electronic dashboard in the pediatric radiology reading room providing a visual display of updated information regarding scheduled and in-progress radiology examinations that could help radiologists to improve clinical workflow and efficiency. To accomplish this, a script was set up to automatically send real-time HL7 messages from the radiology information system (Epic Systems, Verona, WI) to an Iguana Interface engine, with relevant data regarding examinations stored in an SQL Server database for visual display on the dashboard. Missed Acute Appendicitis on Multidetector Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Legal Ramifications, Challenges, and Avoidance Strategies
The failure to diagnose acute appendicitis (AA) is the third most common medical malpractice allegation related to gastrointestinal disease. There is a paucity of detailed data on this topic; however, publications by Whang et al and by Berlin and Berlin, which analyzed all types of malpractice suits against radiologists, have shown that the incidence of litigation has increased over time in the United States. This is likely true for cases of AA as well. The misinterpretation of cross-sectional imaging in patients with suspected appendicitis may be caused by suboptimal technique, errors of omission, i.e, missing key finding...

Mentorship in Radiology
Mentoring is an extremely important component of academic medicine, including radiology, yet it is not specifically emphasized in radiology training, and many academic radiology departments in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere do not have formal mentoring programs for medical students, residents, fellows, or junior faculty. The purpose of this article is to overview the current status of mentorship in radiology, to discuss the importance of mentorship at multiple levels and its potential benefits in particular, as well as how to conduct a successful mentor-mentee relationship.
