Solid-state electrochemistry of metal cyanides
Publication date: Available online 17 May 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Masashi Okubo, Jérôme Long, Daniel R. Talham, Rodrigue LescouëzecAbstractEfficient energy storage in the form of batteries contributes to building sustainable society. As advanced batteries need positive electrode materials capable of larger capacity, higher voltage, and lower cost, it is important to search for novel electrode materials. Among various inorganic/organic materials, cyanido-bridged coordination compounds are promising candidates for battery electrodes due to their ability to undergo solid-state redox reaction associated ...

Marvellous molecular shapes
Publication date: Available online 7 May 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Santiago AlvarezAbstractA survey of a variety of interesting molecular shapes characterized mostly in the last two decades is presented. The selection of molecules shown is made based on their attractive three-dimensional structures (so often concealed by their usual two-dimensional structural formulae), the unusual coordination geometries of metal atoms, the subjective appreciation of how beautiful, funny or interesting a molecular shape is, or the sticky nature of arene rings at terphenyl groups and their effects on the molecular shapes ...

Effect of the alkyl chain length on micelle formation for bis(N-alkyl-N,N-dimethylethylammonium)ether dibromides
In this study, we investigated the relationship between the alkyl chain length and critical micelle concentration for gemini surfactants containing an oxygen atom in the spacer, that is, bis(N-alkyl-N,N-dimethylethylammonium)ether dibromides, for potential use as corrosion inhibitors.Graphical abstract (Source: Comptes Rendus Chimie)

Dialkyl-substituted monoamidinium-templated oxalate-based noncentrosymmetric 2D compounds
Publication date: Available online 6 May 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Catalin Maxim, Sylvie Ferlay, Cyrille TrainAbstract1-Propyl-2-phenyl-3-methylamidinium (A) and 1-hexyl-2-phenyl-3-methylamidinium (B) cations are used to template the formation of two-dimensional (2D) oxalate-based bimetallic compounds of formula A[MnIICrIII(C2O4)3] (1) and B[MnIICrIII(C2O4)3] (2). The single-crystal X-rays diffraction analysis revealed that both compounds crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. In both compounds, the bimetallic coordination network is made of slightly corrugated 2D (6,3) bimetallic honeycomb layer...

Decomplexing madder lakes using oxalic acid: A novel method coupled with microwave or ultrasound processes
Publication date: Available online 27 April 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Jean-Baptiste Mazzitelli, Carole Mathe, Cathy VieillescazesAbstractThe aim of the present study was to establish a mild extraction and universal method to characterize madder lakes of Rubia tinctorum by liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector . To analyze the lakes, anthraquinone molecules must be decomplexed of metal links. To this end, two processes, one ultrasound and the other microwave, were improved in association with two solutions, an oxalic acid solution (0.5 M in MeOH/H2O 50/50) and an acetic acid buffer...

Effect of the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants on corrosion inhibition in hydrochloric acid solution
In this study, the effect of the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants on corrosion inhibition in hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution was investigated by using dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (TTAC), cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), and octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) as corrosion inhibitors to uncover their structure–efficiency relationships. The effect of the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants on corrosion inhibition in HCl solution was studied under different conditions, such as corrosion inhibitor concentratio...

Effects of solvent vapor annealing on the crystallinity and spin crossover properties of thin films of [Fe(HB(tz)3)2]
This study revealed the critical importance of the relative humidity (RH): for values above a threshold of ca. 72% RH (at 298 K) a very fast (seconds) crystallization occurs leading to robust, crystalline films, whereas crystallization at lower RH values is slower (hours) and leads to less stable, semicrystalline films displaying incomplete spin transitions.RésuméNous avons étudié le recuit en présence de vapeurs de solvant d'un film mince obtenu par évaporation thermique du complexe à transition de spin [FeII(HB(tz)3)2] (tz = 1,2,4-triazol-1-yl).
