Surface properties, adherence, and photocatalytic activity of sol–gel dip-coated TiO2–ZnO films on glass plates
In this study, TiO2–ZnO nanostructured films prepared from different Ti/water mole ratios were deposited on glass plates by a sol–gel dip-coating method. The structural and surface properties, adherence, and photoactivity of synthesized TiO2–ZnO coatings in methylene blue degradation were investigated. Among the as-prepared TiO2–ZnO coatings from sols with different Ti/water mole ratios (1, 0.66, 0.5, and 0.4), the highest sol concentration (Ti/water mole ratio of 1) showed the highest methylene blue photodegradation of almost 80% after 400 min of UV irradiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning el...

Magnetic order in a CuII–DyIII oxamato-based two-dimensional coordination polymer
We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic characterization of a novel two-dimensional copper(II)–dysprosium(III) coordination polymer of formula [LiI(OH2)4]2[DyIIICuII2(Me2pma)4Cl(H2O)] . 4H2O (1) [Me2pma = N-2,6-dimethylphenyloxamate]. Compound 1 was obtained using the mononuclear anionic complex [CuII(Me2pma)2]2–, as a bis(bidentate) metalloligand toward solvated dysprosium(III) cations, and it shows a square [DyIIICuII2] layered structure of (44.62) net topology. Interestingly, the combination of two factors, the well-known efficiency of oxamato ligands to transmit strong magnetic couplings between ne...

Structural and photophysical studies of triphenylamine-based nonlinear optical dyes: effects of π-linker moieties on the D-π-A structure
This study shows that these dyes are promising and have special properties for modern hi-tech applications such as solar cells, transistors, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and even these properties can be adjusted and enhanced by the incorporation of the benzothiophene or thienopyrazine derivatives as a bridge so as to improve from L7 to L8. Exploring the coordination abilities of 1,5-diisopropyl-3-(4′-carboxyphenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl
Publication date: Available online 28 June 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Varun Kumar, Sergiu Shova, Ghenadie Novitchi, Cyrille TrainAbstractThe reactivity of 1,5-diisopropyl-3-(4′-carboxyphenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl HIi-Pr toward divalent metal ions is dominated by the coordination of the carboxylate moiety onto the metal ions. The formula of the compound obtained by the reaction with the earth-alkaline magnesium (II) is [Mg(Ii-Pr)2·2H2O]n·0.35H2O (Ii-Pr–Mg) whereas the reaction with 3d divalent metal ions yields compounds of general formula [M(Ii-Pr)2(CH3OH)4] (M = Mn (Ii-Pr–Mn), Co (Ii-Pr–Co), Ni (Ii-Prâ...

Antiwettability enhancement of PVDF-HFP membrane via superhydrophobic modification by SiO2 nanoparticles
In this study, a superhydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene membrane was synthesized via a simple and facile nonsolvent-induced phase inversion process. Hydrophobic nano-SiO2 particles were used as solvent additives to improve the wetting resistance of the membrane. The results revealed that blended nano-SiO2 membranes exhibited enhanced surface hydrophobicity in terms of water contact angle. Such improvement was attributed to the enhancement of surface roughness via the formation of hierarchical multilevel protrusions. Besides, the embedment of nanoparticles in polymer spherulitic globules also contri...

Physics of integer-spin antiferromagnetic chains: Haldane gaps and edge states
In this study, we discuss recent results about the spin dependence of the Haldane gap and conjecture an analytical formula valid asymptotically for large spin values. We then discuss the robustness of the edge states of the spin-1 chain by studying a spin-1 ladder using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. We show that the peculiar hidden topological order of the spin-1 chain disappears smoothly by increasing the ladder rung coupling without any intervening phase transition. This is evidence for the fragile character of the topological order of the spin-1 chain. (Source: Comptes Rendus Chimie)

Synthesis and characterization of 8-aminoquinolines, substituted by electron donating groups, as high-affinity copper chelators for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease
Publication date: Available online 8 June 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Ju Huang, Michel Nguyen, Yan Liu, Anne Robert, Bernard MeunierAbstractThe deregulation of copper homeostasis generates copper–amyloid aggregation and strongly participates in neuron damage in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, copper chelators able to regulate copper homeostasis should be considered as potential therapeutic agents. On the basis of a bidentate amine side chain attached at the 2-position of an 8-aminoquinoline motif, a series of low-molecular-weight copper chelators have been designed to act as sp...

Thermally induced and photoinduced phase transitions in rubidium manganese hexacyanoferrate combining charge transfer and structural reorganization
Publication date: Available online 4 June 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Shin-ichi Ohkoshi, Hiroko Tokoro, Eric ColletAbstractExternal stimuli can alter the physical properties of materials during phase transitions in the solid state. Many researchers have investigated the influence of external stimuli on magnetic, electrical, and optical properties. For example, we previously revealed switching phenomena in cyano-bridged metal complexes induced by various external stimuli. Herein, we introduce how the functionalities of rubidium manganese hexacyanoferrate are driven by a thermally induced and photoinduced cha...

Fluorine and chlorine doping in oxygen-deficient perovskites: A strategy for improving chemical stability
Publication date: Available online 31 May 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Nataliia Tarasova, Irina AnimitsaAbstractThe present work describes the effect of fluorine and chlorine doping on the chemical stability of proton conductors Ba2In2O5, Ba4In2Zr2O11, and Ba4Ca2Nb2O11 against carbon dioxide and water steam. It was proved that both undoped and halide-doped compositions demonstrate good chemical stability under H2O treatment without degradation and without any hydrolytic decomposition. The hydration process leads to the change in the crystal structure only. The treatment in the CO2/air (1:1) atmosphere (500 ...
