Designing and building a low-cost portable FT-NMR spectrometer in 2019: A modern challenge
Publication date: Available online 4 September 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Alain Louis-Joseph, Philippe LesotAbstractHigh-field Fourier-Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (FT-NMR) spectroscopy is a high performance spectroscopic technique that is essential in many analytical fields. The non-destructive nature of NMR makes it a preferred means of analyzing chemical and biological environments. Compact benchtop NMR spectrometers are low-cost alternatives to conventional high-field and high-resolution spectrometers. A research laboratory may want to develop its own compact FT-NMR spectrometer ("home-built be...

A comparative study to evaluate the role of caged hybrid frameworks in the precise dispersion of titanium (IV) oxide for the development of gas separation membranes
In this study, MMMs comprising caged hybrid framework, i.e., octaisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OPOSS) incorporated with TiO2 nanoparticles were developed by phase inversion technique. The effectiveness of OPOSS as a dispersant was determined by using qualitative and quantitative methods. Based on the findings, OPOSS successfully enhanced the dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles as it reduced the surface energy of TiO2 nanoparticles. The optimum amount of TiO2-OPOSS in the tetrahydrofuran/dimethylacetamide casting solution was at 4 wt % TiO2 and 2 wt % OPOSS based on qualitative and quantitative analyses. At ...

Tungsten-doped titanium-dioxide-supported low-Pt-loading electrocatalysts for the oxidation reaction of ethanol in acidic fuel cells
Publication date: Available online 30 August 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Hau Quoc Pham, Tai Thien Huynh, Hoang Ngoc Bich, Toan Minh Pham, Son Truong Nguyen, Le Trong Lu, Van Thi Thanh HoAbstractHigh cost and poor durability of Pt-based electrocatalysts are the main challenges for future commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). In the present work, a stable and effective Pt/Ti0.8W0.2O2 electrocatalyst toward ethanol electrooxidation reactions (EORs) was prepared by utilizing the attributes of noncarbon catalyst supports and low Pt loading. The 18.5 wt % Pt/Ti0.8W0.2O2 electrocatalyst was suc...

Montmorillonite-stabilized gold nanoparticles for nitrophenol reduction
Publication date: Available online 29 August 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Meriem Chenouf, Cristina Megías-Sayago, Fatima Ammari, Svetlana Ivanova, Miguel Ángel Centeno, José Antonio OdriozolaAbstractTwo gold-based catalysts were obtained by Au chemical reduction of the HAuCl4 precursor. The resulting nanoparticles were stabilized and immobilized on montmorillonite (Mt) and montmorillonite-ceria (Mt/CeO2). All prepared catalysts were active in 4-nitrophenol to aminophenol reduction at room temperature. Synergy between montmorillonite and ceria is postulated in such a way that the montmorillonite phase hind...

Carbohydrate-based fluorometric and colorimetric sensors for Cu2+ ion recognition
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Samiul Islam Hazarika, Ananta Kumar AttaAbstractThe development of optical sensors using carbohydrates for selective detection of copper in water and living system has been an active research area in the past few years because of widespread applications and biological importance of copper. Introduction of carbohydrate to design the sensors is an attractive field of research because of its chiral entities with hydroxyl groups and oxygen atoms, controlled ring-flipping capability, abundance, and biocompatibility. This minireview focuses ...

Microwave-assisted extraction of high-molecular-weight hemicelluloses from spruce wood
Publication date: Available online 12 August 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Morad Chadni, Olivier Bals, Isabelle Ziegler-Devin, Nicolas Brosse, Nabil GrimiAbstractMicrowave-assisted extraction (MAE) at atmospheric pressure has been demonstrated as an efficient technology for the extraction of polymeric hemicelluloses from spruce sawdust. This technology was shown to be more efficient than conventional extraction. MAE leads to a high solubilization of wood and a selective extraction of hemicellulose polymers with high molecular weights. To optimize MAE, different treatment powers (125–573 W) of presoaked sp...

Electrochemical oxidation of benzaldehyde and hydroxybenzaldehydes in acetonitrile on platinum and glassy carbon electrodes
Publication date: Available online 30 July 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): László Kiss, Sándor Kunsági-MátéAbstractThe electrochemical oxidation of benzaldehyde and four hydroxybenzaldehydes was studied on platinum and glassy carbon electrodes in acetonitrile. A considerable difference was observed in electrooxidation performed on platinum and glassy carbon electrodes. All hydroxy derivatives fouled the glassy carbon electrode, but platinum was passivated only by the electrooxidation of 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde, highlighting the crucial role of the position of the substituent relative to the hydroxy group. O...

Iron-based nanomaterials used as magnetic mesoporous nanocomposites to catalyze the preparation of N-sulfonylimines
Publication date: Available online 29 July 2019Source: Comptes Rendus ChimieAuthor(s): Akram Ashouri, Saadi Samadi, Behzad Nasiri, Zohre BahramiAbstractA new magnetic nanocatalyzed synthetic method for the synthesis of aldimines was evidenced. The reaction was carried out in a Schlenk tube under reflux conditions using various solvents and different nanomaterials as catalysts. In these reactions, an excellent yield of aromatic aldimines was obtained in the presence of silica-coated magnetic nanomaterials. The prepared catalyst was also characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ...
