Early mortality on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT): the prairie CRRT study
ConclusionPatients admitted to the ICU with AKI requiring CRRT have a high risk of early mortality. In these patients, vasopressor use and hypoxia were independently associated with adverse short-term survival. (Source: Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease)

The association between individual counselling and health behaviour change: the See Kidney Disease (SeeKD) targeted screening programme for chronic kidney disease
ConclusionsIndividual counselling and goal setting provided at screening events may stimulate behaviour change amongst individuals at risk for CKD. However, further research is required to determine if this behaviour change is sustained and the impact on CKD progression and outcomes. (Source: Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease)

Recognizing IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis
AbstractPurpose of the reviewImmunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder affecting nearly all organs, including the kidney. Tubulointerstitial nephritis (IgG4-TIN) is the most common form of IgG4-related kidney disease (IgG4-RKD) and is the focus of this concise review.ObjectiveThe study aims to describe when IgG4-TIN should be suspected and to summarize the diagnosis, treatment, and natural history of the disease.Sources of informationOvid MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and PubMed were searched for full-text English language articles up to January 2016. Willingness to participate in a randomized trial comparing catheters to fistulas for vascular access in incident hemodialysis patients: an international survey of nephrologists
ConclusionsOur survey results suggest that nephrologists believe there is equipoise surrounding the optimal vascular access strategy and that a randomized controlled study should be undertaken, but restricted to those individuals with a high risk of primary fistula failure. Perceptions of pediatric nephrologists regarding timing of dialysis initiation in children in Canada
ConclusionsVariability exists in Canada regarding the importance and threshold of eGFR guiding the decision as to when to start dialysis in children, whereas patient symptoms are almost universally important to pediatric nephrologists ’ decision-making. Additional studies evaluating outcomes of children starting dialysis earlier vs. later are needed to standardize decision-making and care for children with kidney failure. Needs assessment: towards a more responsive Canadian Society of Nephrology Annual General Meeting (CSN AGM) program
ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first published example of a needs assessment for a nephrology CME event that considers both the perceived and unperceived needs of the membership. The results of this exercise are currently being used to assist in the development of a more responsive CME program. (Source: Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease)

A retrospective review of the two-step tuberculin skin test in dialysis patients
ConclusionsThe TST has limited diagnostic and clinical utility for LTBI screening in patients on dialysis. Further research into the diagnostic accuracy of interferon-gamma release assays and a revision of LTBI screening guidelines in patients on dialysis should be considered.
